Does anyone have an IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual GSS-1032 (Tel-A-Depth System)? I have one that came as a package from Binder Books. Problem is that it is the first edition (8-29-58) and does not include any updates.

There were two different Tel-A-Depth systems: the first used a cable and differential gear arrangement for follow-up linkage. Later systems used a "walking beam" lever system and didn"t have the cable/differential gear system. The version of the manual I have covers the earlier system, my 340U has the later system. My question is whether there ever was an updated version published to cover the later system.

If you"d look at your manual, would you check the published date? At least I"ll know what to look for.

I have a copy of the installation instructions for the fasthitch & tel-a-depth system on a IH & Farmall 340. Its about 40 pages but if you are interested, [and patient] I could scan it and e mail it to you.

Thanks for the offer to copy that manual for me. Actually I do have the same one you talked about - I didn"t think to look in there for adjustments resetting it up, so I"ll get it out tonight and have a look.

But I appreciate your offer.

Paul; I have a I&T manual #IH201 that covers the 340 as well as others. Starting on page 74 it has 4 1/2 pages devoted to the assembly and adjustment of the Tel-A-Depth system. Hope this helps. LE

Thanks for the tip. A local buddy of mine has that manual and I plan to borrow it from him to copy those pages. Didn"t realize it was in there.

Thanks again

8-29-58. My 460U is disassembled, has the later system also; but I have an early 460. If the book doesn't cover it, I've completely forgotten how it goes together, excetp for my parts manual. You will have yours together before me, so I'll probably be asking you questions--If Binder doesn't have an update, I doubt if there is one. However, the IT manual (IH-25) covers both types. In scanning it, it will remain Greek to me until I begin to assemble it.

Hope I remember how this thing goes back together. . .

Next time I"ll do the entire tractor all at once, rather than in stages. I"m going to have to do a lot of masking when I paint the back half.

Interesting you have a similar situation, my 340 is an early tractor with the later system as well. I suppose it was retrofitted back in it"s history somewhere. I was hoping to find the appropriate manual pages so that I can make sure the linkages are adjusted optimally.

If you haven"t seen this website I think you"ll find it helpful:

The 340 manifold is different from my 460U. All 4 of the units in mine are separate. In other words, mine doesn't have the big cast housing that they all fit into, they just bolt together, the end pieces are separate also. I took them all off and replaced the seals, etc. Going to be a lot of fun?, trying to get it all back together, if I ever do.

Actually my valve set-up sounds similar to yours - there are four long bolts that sandwich all the individual valves together.

Anyway, my question to you: When you rebuilt your Hydra-Touch Control Valves, did you remove the valve assembly from the cast body and disassemble it? When I pulled the cast cover off of all of my valves, they were each a third full of thick sludge. I removed the valve assembly from the housing and cleaned everything. But I"ve not been able to get the slotted retainer off of the valve to disassemble it. I thought about cutting a notch in a drag link socket, but wonder if it"s worth the effort. I"m afraid of I "try" too hard I might damage something. Was curious what your experience was with them. Never tried the remote hydraulics but am planning on installing a 1701 loader so I wanted to make sure everything was working properly.

My whole system had the typical water in oil thing. I wanted it CLEAN, so I disassembled everything. I also wanted to paint every part on the tractor separately (extreme overkill) which is why I am not done yet. As to your question, I'm not sure I know what part you mean. If you have a parts book, give me the name of the part in the book, and I will look in mine and see if I can remember what it is. You might give me a part number in case mine and yours are the same. I have had all 4 (on mine) units apart, they are currently in plastic bags to keep the dust out. AND, I think I did this prior to last January, my memory is non-existent.

The parts I"m referring to are #15 and #10. Did you open up #10 to inspect/clean all of the internals? I"m having difficulty non-destructively unthreading 15 from 10. Perhaps it"s better left alone . . . .

I hate to say I don't remember, but I don't. If 15 is as hard to get out as you say I likely didn't. If it was easy I probably did, because when I repair something I usually tear it down as far as possible. I think I would remember struggling with those parts, because I have 3 remotes. Likely one or all would have given me trouble in disassembly. But, I don't remember any particular trouble with those. Mine are sealed up now, hope they work. I realize this doesn't help you.
