I have an IH 434. The draft control push rod is recessed in the case about 3/4". Is there any easy way to trouble shoot the problem?

Chuck, as I remember the rod that stuck out by the top link bolt was controlled by the draft control lever. If the draft control lever was set to heavy draft, all the way forward the rod did not stick out much and light draft it stuck out far enough to contact the top link mechanism.

Apply some lubricant as suggested by Hugh and work the draft control lever back and forth.

Chuck: Probably start with a penetrating oil, these have a habit of sticking from corosion and rust when not used regularly. When you get it cleaned up and dry, spray on some graphite, and make sure some gets worked into the sleeve. Dry lubricant is best for these long term. Oils and grease tend to collect dust, then when not used for awhile, the lube dries up and the dust stays.

Thanks for the tip. I was sure I would have to jump right in and tear the top off it. Worst case scenario, I may be also looking at a bad spring or some other broken part.

Chuck: It is possible, you have something broken, however I always like to look at the easy and economical fixes first. I've never had any first hand experience with a 434, but a lifetime of farming with 20 different tractors, tells me to look for corosion and rust with these draft controls, especially if they haven't been used quite regularly.

Most of my tractors were parked all winter, and come spring all those little gadgets needed attention. I still have 3 tractors, mainly for gardening, grass cutting and snow plowing. That rust and corosion factor is worse now than when I worked them 500 hours per year.
