...can you give me some advice on my Cub? We're going to have a welded-up torque tube replaced with one that hasn't been borken & welded. While we are there, I want to change the clutch and throw-out bearing. I think that I once read that the original throw-outs are some type of fiber and that a "real" throw-out bearing is now available. Is this correct & if so, what do we need to do to change it over to what is probably a better system?

Also, we have to take off the cover that the shifting lever goes through to re-allign the gears frequently. Does the end of the shifter wear like an H's does, as that's what it acts like. Whats probably wrong & whats the best fix here?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

I have to echo RAW's comments. The ball bearings have not been holding up well. I'd go with an original style graphite bearing. Be sure to lube it before installation. These things hold up for 50 - 60 years.

On the shifter there are a couple of possibilities. Either the shifter tip has worn or the tower guide is worn. Either can be repaired fairly easily.
The tip on the shift lever can be welded up and ground down and if you copy and paste this link it will show you a great shifter repair slideshow.

They make a ball bearing throwout bearing for the Cub, but I have read where itdfoesn't work as well as the original. The original works good if kept greased and you don't "ride" the clutch or hold the pedal down for long periods. The shift lever does wear like the others, and someone had an article on how to rebuild them, I believe it wason the Cub forum. Go to farmal cub web site. You need to log in but they have a lot of info on the Cub there.
