Do the participants on this board mind answering simple questions? I just purchased my first Farmall (47 H). I have not had time to do a lot of research. 1. Are the lubricant sections separate for the differential, transmission, and hydralic pump? I have a leak under what I think is the pump. I am guessing the differential and transmission are the same. My speciality if Fords, but I like Farmalls. 2.It has a slight miss while bush hogging, but seems to clear up under the hardest load. It is still six volt and starts easily. I have not done anything as far as tune up. 3. What is the appropriate engine oil? On the Ford board, you get many answers to this question. Hope this is not too much at one time.
Thanks
Gary

As Pappy said, a manifold leaking extra air is a distinct possibility. Check by squirting some engine oil on the area around the intake manifold gasket and see if the engine runs better/ worse.

We had an "H" that would miss-fire at idle, but run pretty good under load such as you describe. We found a leak in the manifold gasket allowing it to suck in air. New Gasket--No more Problem!

I am from Kentucky. Have lived in Georgia since 1982. I have been asked this about once a month since 1966.

Trans and differential are one and the same, uses 80-90 wt. Hydraulic belly pump is a seperate unit all to itself, the book calls for 30wt non-detergent motor oil for warm weather, 20wt for cooler weather, but most of us never change it, just run 30 year round. Engine oil can be whatever you use in your car or truck. Personally I shy away from 5w-30, but 10w-30 is fine, 10w-40 if that's what you use, and some guys use 15w-40. These old Farmalls just aren't too picky. The oil bath air cleaner can use the same oil as the engine. The slight miss almost sounds like wear in the distributor, not really too unusual.

The pulley gets splash off the transmission and the PTO is in the differential.

Hi Gary, When I purchased my 49 H, It had been sitting for quite a while. It had leaves in the gas tank, 3 different sizes of spark plugs, spark plug wires had been taped where they had cracked , ect ,ect. I cleaned the tank out, replaced the leaky fuel valve/ bowl assy, cleaned out the carb, put in a fresh set of D-21 champion plugs and installed a new set of NON- Resistor, copper core wires and man you would not believe the difference. This old tractor idles low and smooth, and all the way to full throttle it pulls hard and runs very smooth.Smokes a bit when you first hit the throttle but clears up quick. Who knows how long it has been since any maintenence has been done to your tractor, Take a little time to freshen up the basics, you may be pleasantly surprised as I was. Good luck.
