I know this is a little off the topic but if my brakes don"t work I can"t haul the tractors.
Here is the problem. The brakes worked great last night and this morning but it started to rain and now there is nothing. The power light is on but it doesn"t change color when I hit the brakes.
Ground problem?
Thanks Shaggy

try the slide on your controller, if the brakes work by using the slide your ground is good.

I had that problem a short while ago going to a show. Since I didn't have a heavy load I didn't check it until I got to the grounds. Turned out to be the brake wire separated on the trailer at a connector, I twisted them together and everything is now fine. Dick

Shaggy,I had the same problem last week.On my truck I have 2 power sources1-At the fuse box,and the fuse was blowned.2-One wire goes from the battery I think to the brake controller than to the brakes ,this cable had crodded of of the battery,I replaced the fuse and the light would come on when I hooked the plug into the trailer, but it would not change to orange when i applied the brakes, untill I found the bad wire at the battery

As the others have said but also check your lights. If they work but the brakes don't look where the brakes ground on the trailor and you will probably find that the water is causeing you to loose ground there. If the lights don't work either then you have the ground problem they are talking about. When I wire up a triaolr I run one wire in the plug right to the ground side of the battery and to a number of points on the trailor so I'm less likely to loose a ground

A lot of commerical trailers depend on the connection between the coupler and ball for a ground connection - its a terrible design, but I suppose it saves the manufacturer a few cents. As Jnicholson says, the first suspect is the ground connection, particularly between the trailer & tow vehicle.

I always run a ground wire directly from the brakes to the ground pin in the trailer electrical connector, and make sure the pin in the vehilce side is well bonded to the vehicle ground as well. You can connect the brake return wire to the trailer frame if you want to, but the important connection for brakes is the retun to the tow vehicle ground.

Try a jumper cable from trailer to frame of toe vehicle. If it works, fix the wiring ground. If it does not, check wire in wire out of the connectors and terminals. The rain should not cause instant problems. JimN
