Gentlemen, Was wondering how most of you use your tractor when turning around doing field work. When you get to the end of the row while you are discing, do you usually go to the low side of T/A, do you throttle back, or do you just turn without doing anything? Basically was wondering what's better on the tractor, throttling back to slow down for the turn or using the T/A to slow down for the turn. Thanks for your opinion

Make my turns a little wide....if the tractor dont want to turn touch the brake on that side.....I am using a drag disk, so you want the swinging drawbar free to swing.....this helps turning.....

Lets assume that the tractor doesn't have a T/A like most of them. You would have no choice but to use the throttle. On my 4-150 white the throttle response on that 3208 is so good that it will slow right down instantly with the throttle so the tractor is barely moving but still can pull the implement easily. I raise the implement most of the way out of the ground or if I am plowing all the way out. Now you turn the corner and it is all the way to about 3/4 to full throttle depending on what I am doing with it. I have never slowed on end rows with any tractor T/A if I can avoid it. I guess if the T/A is working good it would not hurt to do it that way if you prefer it for speed and effeciancy. Seems like lots of situations are a little different from one another. Whatever floats your boat!

Doyle: Long time, how are you doing anyhow. I thought about you the other day. I've still got those photos on file from your peanut growing lessons. I haven't tried it yet.

On your slow down question, I'd have to say usually TA. Under most working conditions you want to keep PTO or hydraulic function constant while reducing speed. I wouldn't say I never use the throttle and indeed sometimes use both. Every situation has a judgement call, and the last thing one wants to do is add shock loads to hitches and trailer implement suspensions. Usually the tractor will handle the speed.

For example baling continuous around the field, often time the windrows are not as uniform on the turns. TA will give the baler just a bit better chance to handle that. I remember my 656 wf with 9' haybine, TA on the corner and the haybine wouldn't miss a stem of hay. Plowing is another case for TA especially with big plows 4 or more bottoms. You stay in high with a 5 bottom plow and there will be 3' between entry or exit of first and last bottom. Pull back TA, keeping that hydraulic function constant, and a good plowman could put a straight edge across the ends of furrows at the end of the day, and the end of every furrow will be within 1' of the straight edge.

In summary I'd have to say TA 90% of the time.

T/A and the inside brake if the implement requires a tight turn. Never touch the throttle 'cause it wastes too much time.

Hi All, I would use T/A frequently when chopping corn. We would plant the field round and round until the corners became to tight to turn. So would pull back the T/A when entering a corner so tractor would slow down but PTO speed remain constant.

Seems to me if you raise the implement and unload the power train, the down shift with the TA would be hard on the ramp and rollers. I have always believed that the TA needs to find a load quickly so that it will lock up promptly. But I am not a farmer so what do I know. Seems to me that the throttle will give you more speed reduction than the TA. Low range TA is 33% reduction. Throttle control will be about 60% or better.

Well, I don't do heavy field work any more, but when I was younger and we had several tractors with T/A's we always used the T/A to slow down for a turn. We never had problems with T/A's wearing out. Far as I know the only bad for a T/A is to go to the low range while rolling down a hill with no load.

Throttle most often. If in tough soil plowing, TA allowed Hyd to work faster, and slowed down the time/speed in a way that allowed clean turns. I never hesitated using the TA and the original TA is still in our 350U!. JimN

I personally prefer to raise the implement, throttle down, turn, throttle up, lower implement. Seems to be the easiest on all the equipment. I even raise the implement with the 4x4 tractor.

We had a 350 whenI was a kid, and it kind of depended on the conditions. If we were working with the TA on high side, would pull it back to turn, Otherwise often throttled back. We had a 3-16 fast-hitch plow and I used to just push the hitch lever to raise plow, spin the wheel and hit the brake to turn. Stopped that practice after the sway bar shaft on the fast-hitch broke. Couldn't take the constant pounding.
