I need to get a new radiator cap for my 49 H. Is the cap the only difference between a pressurized and a non- pressurized system?? How do I determine which one I need ?....Tom

A 1949 H would have come from the factory with a pressurized radiator, possible it could have been changed over the years, but not likely. The pressurized cap will have a wing on it, the non-pressurized radiator cap will be round and smooth, will say "water" on it, and will interchange with gas tank cap.

One way to tell is a gas tank cap will fit non pressure radiator but not pressure radiator.

SS: I think all Hs were presurized, at least by 49 they were. Some of the early ones may not have been presurized. I may be wrong but I believe all letter series tractors with water pumps were presurized. It was only small tractors using thermosyphon that were non presurized.

I may be wrong as I'm just going by the ones I've seen. I've never had a lot of exposure to pre 1950 tractors.

hi hugh, the pressure radiators on h's and m's started during world war ll. they started using steel instead of copper for the fins and went to the pressure system to raise the boiling point due to the not as good heat exchange. i have had a couple of these tractors and the fins were rusting off the tubes.

Hugh, my H was made in May of 1942 and it is not presurized.

Some early H"s were non-pressurized. Look at the grill and neck of the radiator. Is there an overflow tube coming out of the neck of the radiator? Is there a groove cut in the grill opening to make room for the overflow tube?

Also, the early, non-pressure version used the dzus fasteners to hold the grill to the radiator.

Nope, they made the change over to pressurized sometime in 42. My early 42 H has non-pressure radiator. My late 42 I believe has pressurized.

I think the dzus fasteners were only on the 39 models...

I would think that H and M would have changed about same time and Dzuz fasteners were used on M through SN 24214-late 1940 and non pressure radiator was used through SN 60244-early 1943. This is from parts book may be wrong.

I stand corrected on the dzus fasteners.

I'm pretty sure that my late 42 H has a pressure cap on it... just don't remember 100% for sure.

Thanks for the clarifications, guys!

Steven, when the changover was made, the non-pressure style was made obsolete, and the only replacement radiator you could get was the new pressurized style, which means that even if the tractor was originally a non-pressurized, it could very easily now be the newer style.

Nope, my 1940 with June casting codes has the dzus fasteners.
