brother-in-law tried to speed shift our 686 this evening goter stuck in two gears and stuck good it is. had to drag it and our 851 newholland roller of the hi-way with my old h and a four wheel drive truck any ideas how to get it to turn loose? i knew i didnt like that darn side shifter now i know i hate it. man what a mess

terry: I wouldn't be too critical of your brother in law, as these tractors get older, this occurs from time to time. It requires maintainence and maybe some replacment parts for that linkage. I would be more critical of the guy who didn't bother to do the maintainence and upgrading.

Then the guys I'd be real critical of are the guys who dragged it of the hard road while locked up. There is a good chance it was only partially engaged in gears. It would be in two gears at same time. You may have done more damage dragging it than he did shifting it. As vet said, it's a very quick job to align the shifting linkage. I've had success without even removing battery, but you have to be damn careful. I've never seen it take more than 5 min. Tractor probably sat there for an hour waiting for the tow job.

Pull the battery and battery tray and you will see the shift rails and pop them back in line , sure hope he did not trash it .

i have no fix for this as ive never seen this happen becuase i was told not to powershift

i here ya talking i guess he thought he was still in his big rig he is a otr driver done pulled the platform off and cant rock the tractor and pry those shafts back to nuetrallooks like we gona haft to pull the top of the trannie unless someone has a better idea thanks, terry

Did he try to powershift or was this an attempt at a proper double-clutch shift? Probably would've worked on a new tractor, but with the worn linkages...
