Let's go the dumb question route...

I have a 48 H and a 52 H, both with band brakes. My question is this: On both of my tractors, to set the brakes you have to depress the pedals and reach down and lift the brake lock by hand. I got the chance to work on a couple of other Farmalls last weekend (H's and M's, some Supers, some straight)...all had a rod that ran to the left side of the deck plate that would allow you to lift the brake lock with the use of your left foot. Is that standard and my two old Farmall's just don't have it, or was this retrofitted over the years?

Hey, Billy. Your southern neighbor here. Like the others said, they are retrofit. OEM Tractor Parts down in Illinois makes one. By the way, our company is all gone now. Daughter Kristin left for Edinburgh yesterday to join new husband Paul, who left a week and a half ago to get back to his swordmaking. Where were you harvesting tobacco? Sounds interesting to me. Take care. David

It was a retrofit, from aftermarket companies. There was also one that ran up the side of the steering post that you could set by hand. The simplest one I ever saw was Dad made though. He simply welded a short bolt to the top of the plate at the front end of the plate so you could hit it with your heel while depressigng the brake.

Any of those devices are all aftermarket, either dealer installed or by the owner. I never did like the one that you had to catch with the heel of your foot. I do like the style that uses a rod mounted to the light bar. I need to go out to the shop and see if I can make a couple.

I always thought they were aftermarket too...but when we harvested tobacco last weekend, I was on six different H's or M's other than my own, and they ALL had that type of brake set-up.

To be honest with ya, that left foot set-up kinda p*ssed me off since it seemed to hang up when you wanted to release the brakes. At least with the hand set mechanism, ya just punch the pedals quick and away ya go!

Thanks for the information Rusty and John. After being on so many letter series through the years, I thought my brain was lettin' go a little bit.

Billy

I have made a few over the years for others but I keep telling myself I need the stretch it takes to set the brakes.

My thought exactly. I am not, nor do I want to be, quite that lazy. Maybe in 30 years I'll consider it.
