Keep in mind the tractor's 55 years old. Seals wear out and fail, especially 55 year old seals...

Like Rusty says, you gotta determine if it's tranny fluid or hydraulic fluid. Check the levels in both the belly pump (dipstick under the gas tank if it's like the farmalls) and the transmission (pipe plug on the left side of the people often refer to as the "transmission" housing IIRC). Whichever one is down is where the fluid is coming from for sure.

Don't discount the possibility that the tranny's full of water from sitting outside, though. It may still appear to be full... of water.

There are two seals that will give trouble, one is on the transmission main input shaft, the other is the transmission counter shaft that is coupled to the hydraulic belly pump. If either of these seals are leaking, you will see transmission/rear end fluid leaking from under the center of the tractor. The trans/rear end oil is a heavy, 80/90 weight oil. It is also possible that the belly pump input shaft seal is leaking. The oil in the belly pump should be a lighter weight oil, similar to motor oil. There is an inspection cover, directly behind the belly pump. Remove the cover, get a flashlight, and take a look up in that dark hole. You should be able to see where the oil leak is coming from.

W-6 never came with a belly pump. The live distributor pump is the only hydraulic that was available.

Live pump would not have been available in 1951. Could have been added later, but if it were leaking anywhere it would not show up under the center of the tractor.

Going to risk being put on Magman hit list and say the IH live pump set up with tank hoses and valve was available for a 51 W6. Don't know about leak unless fluid is getting out of reservior tank some way or transmission has hytran or equivalent fluid and leaking. Is both lines to Hydraulic pump capped? Do lines go to bottom of pump or top?

Magman can take it and so can I so I'll risk getting on the list.

Nobody said it was factory hydraulics, but live hydraulics leak is not hard to see compared with a belly pump.

I am real surprised W-6 never had belly pumps. I thought my O-6 did but I'll have to look. Never had a W-6.

Andy, to clear my answer up I just pointed out that a live pump became available for 6 series farmalls in 1950 sometime I think. Don't know when M&W and others first came out. The reason I ask which way lines came from pump was to try and find out if it was aftermarket or not. The W6 used bathtub frame with no place for pump. Also on front of transmission counter shaft, no drive dog for pump drive was used. Without looking at Tractor all I could do was give guess on hydraulic leak. Also I should not be making fun at Magmans expense when he was upset because I have done things that the song, what was I thinking kept going through my head.

Correction to date. I think the live hydraulic attachment was available sometime in 1951 not 1950 as in second post. Also on tractor in question who knows at what date hydraulics were added.

Andy, check it out will you? I was under the impression that the belly pump was an option for the W6 just as it was for an M.

No belly pumps in 6s. Yes, live pumps were available in W-6s in 1951, 1948 in O-6s.

No argument here. Obviously no place for it as there is only a small inspection opening right under the clutch.
