Super A Transmission Problem

I have been working on my Dad"s old tractor that hadn"t run for years... Stuck valves, shot carburator, etc...

The motor runs well, but the shifting forks won"t stay put. I have removed the cover twice, put the forks back where they belong, and it happened again.

I can"t say I know much about transmissions, the official IH Farmall Super A manual isn"t much help.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

D.R. Gray: In the top plate with the shift lever, there are 3 shift rails. one for reverse, one for 1st and 2nd and one for 3rd and 4th. Those rails all have detent balls with springs that hold transmission in or out of a particular gear. You mention the tractor has been parked for years, thus those springs and balls could be stuck or rusted.

The first thing I would try is putting the top cover complete with shift lever and rails, submerged in a container of oil for several days. When you remove it from the oil, try shifting with cover sitting on blocks. You should be able to feel those detent balls going into detents. Should the oil not free the balls up, they are, or I should say were available from CaseIH as recently as 2 years ago.

The transmission is well greased, without rust on the detents, forks, and rails. When the problem occurs, first gear becomes reverse without warning. The fix has been to remove the cover and re-align the forks. I can't figure out why it jumps in the first place.

D.R.: Are the forks coming out of collar on the gear or is it just sliding into reverse taking rail with it. If fork is out of collar on the reverse gear then the fork must be bent. However if the fork is still in collar, then is has to be a detent ball. Those hold it out of gear as well as in gear.

If the problem happens while shifting gears, the problem may be wear on the tip of the shift lever and the forks. The lever may be escaping out of the notch in the shifter fork before it is in the neutral position.

The fix may be to build up the tip of the lever with a welder then grind it into a reasonable shape.

Jim: I thought of that, but he seems quite adamit that it can drop into reverse any old time. My 130 was doing that 3 years ago with 1st and 2nd. You could depress clutch and brake in 1st gear and without touching lever it would go to 2nd just from momentum. It would pop out of either 1st or 2nd when pulling hard. I have rebuilt many a shift lever on H, M, 300, 560, etc. but my 130 lever was perfect. Detent balls were the culpert.

From the way he stated the problem, that wasn't totally clear to me. That is why I mentioned the other possibility (if it happens while shifting).

I have seen the worn lever/rail problem first hand on at least one A. I managed a few times to pop things back in place using the shift lever without pulling the cover. I would have never tried except dad managed to do it one day while I was going after the wrenches to take the cover off.

Another weird one we had was on (I think) a Super A. The bushing for the oil slinger gear siezed. As I recall, the oil slinger gear is between second and third, speed wise. In any case, it moved with difficulty in any gear but easily went forward in neutral.
