Good afternoon. I was watching a neighbor try to start an old H by pulling it with another tractor. When he let off the clutch on the H the left rear wheel continued to roll forward but the right started to roll backward. Whats up with this?

PS never did start

If the engine will not turn, one wheel may indeed turn forward and the other backward. The rear end differential does this. The chances are that something will break if this happens for more than an instant with an engine that will not turn. The starter drive could be jammed in the flywheel ring gear. To unjam, put tractor in high forward gear and push/tow it BACKWARD for just a couple of feet. That will unjam the starter. Always push/tow start tractors in the highest gear.

Check your timing. May be WAY out of time....maybe 180.

Thats how most tractors, trucks, and car are with the rear ends in them being differencals. Shoot if you jack up a rear wheel drive car ot truck with both rear tires off the ground and its in gear or park. If you spin the right hand wheel by hand the left hand wheel will spin the oppoist way that the one your spin does. Now as far as what happen on that tractor he either had it in to low a gear or something like the starter has the engine locked up. Either way its not a good thing to see happen becuase stuff can start to brake when that happens

As all the others said and I'll include transmissiom in too low gear and/or poor traction.

Could be the starter is locked up. Why are you pulling it?

The way the spider gears in the differential are arranged, if one tire is rolling forward, and the engine will not turn, the other tire MUST roll backwards or something breaks.
