Hello folks:

I have an M-TA, and I want to know the correct tire size. I am planning to replace the rear tires and rims. The tractor currently has 13.6-38 tires (I have not measured the rim, yet.) These tires 'look right' on the tractor. However, I have seen some M-TA's with 15.5-38 tires (probably with bigger rims). What was originally there?

as CNKS replied 15.5 x38 was not available until 1955 which was after the super mta was discontinued. your rims are almost certainly eleven inches wide. there were twelve inch rear rims available for the super mta's that had the 13x38 tire option. there never were any thirteen inch drop center rims.

My 52 MD has 13.9 x 36 with the split ring rims on it. As far as we know it is original as this was a option. Not quite sure what the advantage would have prompted someone to order it this way But I like it. It's different enought to get some looks and good farmall conversation going.

I don't think 15.5's were available when your tractor was new.

Standard tire was 12-38 6 ply. Both 11-38 and 13-38 were optional.

Most if not all tires have recommended rim size molded on sidewall. Just looked at the following...9.5 x 24 Armstrongs on 8 inch rim...12.4 x 38 Firestones on 11 inch rim...13.6 x 38 Uniroyals on 12 inch rim...15.5 x 38 Goodyears on 14 inch rim. The 12.4 x 38 was also branded replaces 11 x 38 and the 13.6 x 38 was branded replaces 12 x 38.

You are correct, but he is asking what was origially there. Most common was 11 and 12X38 on 11 inch rims and 13x38 on 12 inch rims. Don't think IH sold any 14 inch rims for SM or SMTA when tractors were new.

Dave is correct. IH typically used rims that were 1 inch smaller than the tire tread width. 14.9-38 is exactly the same tire as the old 13-38. The 13 refers to tread width, 14.9 is the cross section at the widest point. So a 12 inch rim works fine with a 14.9 tire. My 460 had 15.5's on a 12 inch rim. They were not distorted, not to my eyes anyway, although they should probably be on 13 inch rims. 15.5 does not have an even number tread width so it has always been 15.5, unlike most of the other sizes.

I think the tire that looks absolutely the best on a SMT-A is the 15.5x38. I agree with TV that the rim size should be changed to a 14 inch rim. It surely would depend on what you are going to use the tractor for. If you are going strictly for looks, get the 15.5's, if you are going to work the tractor, get the 14.9's. The reason for this is the 14.9's will give you a longer footprint, and actually put more rubber on the ground than the 15.5. My uncle had a SMT-A and it had the 14.9's on it, and could out pull our 560 that had 15.5's on it. Hope this helps. Johng

Back when New it was a 12x38 and that was replaced with the 13.6x38 , now the 15.5 is the same hight as the 13.6 but the 15.5 should be on 14 inch wide rims to keep it layen flat . what looks real nice on a S/MTA is the 14.9 x38 but here again it takes a 14 inch rim . You can split and weld in a band to widen your rims out if it has the 12 inch rim on it now and if done wright you can not realy tell . I widend the rims on mine and made mine 15 1/2 inchs wide and like a dumb Arrs i put 16.9x38 on it just so i could go play tractor pullen , should have listened to my inner self and went with the 14.9's as they are a bit taller then the 15.5 and darn near as wide as the 15.5 and they do look good on a MTA . THe only nice thing about the 16.9's is THE ROAD SPEED With the govener set at 2100 she will get down the road.

Vet, I may be mistaken but think part of SM and SMTA were equiped with 13X38 on 12 inch rims which was replaced by 14.9 X 38. Going to Portland tomorrow, what day were you going?

Ya may be correct on that i don't know all the specs But i think that99% of them have what ever the farmer replaced wqith as i have seen just about all sizes and even seen sone of them with H rims as the org. rusted out . And as for being 100% correct there are vary few that are still 100% as they may try and look stock but they made them 12 volt and added and alt or what ever . I was going to try and keep mine as close as i could till i got the bug to go and play and like i said i should have listend to my inner self as it was telling me to go with the 14.9's But no i had to go play . As for going to Portland it will be Saturday as for the time that we get there that's still up in the air as to when we leave here my be friday afternoon sometime or it may be between 6-8 am Saturday morning and that would put us on the grounds at around 11:30 to 1.

The experts will set us straight, but generally the original equipment tires were a lot smaller than "looks right" today.

Multiple tire sizes were available but I think a 12.4-38 or even 11.2-38 may have come on an MTA.
