Just got a Farmall M and need to adjust the brakes and i dont have my book for it yet so thought i would ask here. my pedals go almost to the end of their travel before i have any brakes, so i adjusted the spring and bolt that hooks to the pedal thinking that was the adjustment, but reading on an old message on here it talkes about a bolt on the bottom of the brake band case that needs to be tightened and then backed out 1/2 round. i thought i better make sure i'm doing this correctly before i go buy new bands, but still might have to do that. so have i dont this correctly with the adjustment of the turnbuckle that is on the pedals or is that just for pedal travel?
thanks
Gary

The band is loose around the brake drum. The bolt in the bottom is used to hold the band up to keep the top of the band from rubbing on the brake drum before you apply the brakes. Adjust the bolt on the bottom after you get the pedal travel you want.

so the fact that i cant adjust my pedals anymore to get rid of free travels has nothing to do with the bolt in the bottom and i need to replace the bands? would that sound correct? i was anticipating that until i read the post about the bold, OR will by adjusting that bolt get rid of some of the free travel i have in the pedals?

Adjust the turnbuckles to reduce pedal travel, but more importantly to get both pedals to brake at the same time when locked together.

When you run out of turnbuckle and still don't have brakes you need to think about new bands.

The bottom bolt only helps to center the band on the drum. Lock the brakes on tight; then turn the bottom bolt fully in, back it 1/2 turn out, and lock it in place with the locknut provided.
If you cannot get the pedals "tightened" up to a minimum free travel, the bands are worn out. Not all replacement bands are "created" equal so look for a reputable supplier. Your IH dealer is a good choice. If replacing the bands; it would be a good time to replace the brake drum seals as well. Look for oil seepage behind the drum.
