On the 2 sets we made,we used 1/2" thick. Then we put 4 3"by3" tabs with a hole, welded them to the ring where they could be bolted to the cleat. The bolt ran under the point of the cleat with a 3"by3" washer on the opposite side of the welded tab.
As far as the rubber goes,we used old belting from a round baler, cut to width, the we used contact cement on the rim and rubber. Also put in a few well placed stove bolts(small ones) to help hold the rubber.st what we did, hope it helps.I may have a pic or to if ya email me.

I would have preferred the 1/2 inch rim but I did not have the capability of bending metal that thick. With the 1/2 inch it would be good for the tabs and bolts that you mention. I am not certain about the thinner metal. It may be that I will have to put spacers and bolts between the ring and rim at mid way between the spikes due the thickness of the metal.

Dont know yet.

What thickness and width are you useing for the road rings your building? Your picture has me motivated. Any trouble to be looking for?
Thanks

Yes, I intend to attach rubber to the rings.

The rings are 4.5 inches wide and 1/4 thick. They turned out 4.5 inches because that was the width of the scrap on the floor at the fabricator.

I took the cleats down to my friends sheet metal fabricating business and told him to make me some rims to fit them. 1/4 inch was the thickest he could roll on the machine that makes this metal curve. He made two halves which I intend to fit snug, cut to length and weld together to make ring. The c clamps were to get it snug before cutting to length. I have not decided on how to attach the ring to the wheel yet...still thinking about that.

I'd think those C-clamps would make for a kinda bumpy ride on a hard surface.....altho they might give decent traction in loose dirt....:)

Seriously though, it's looking good! I take it you're planning on covering the rings with rubber somehow?
