I bought a 2606 (gas)that runs great, good oil pressure, but with a noise in the engine crankcase area like I've never heard before. I've heard connecting rod knocks, main bearing rattles and the screech a bearing gives when it spins but this one sounds like a rough roller bearing that is just slowly grinding it's way into oblivion. However, this tractor has been running for at least a couple years with this noise. I'm going to pull the pan and have a look, but if anyone has run into this before, I'd appreciate thoughts on what to look for.
Thanks,
Smiley

How are the clutch splines? Sometimes noises travel a ways.

Brownie,
It could use a clutch and the noise does sound like a bad throwout bearing, but doesn't change much when stepping on the clutch. I had sort of discounted that end while listening with the stethascope, as it is the loudest right on the oil pan. As you said though, noises do travel and I suppose the pan being thin, could magnify the sound, as opposed to listening through the side of the cast clutch housing.
Thanks for the idea,
Smiley
