I have a 51 M that needs a new tube in the front tire. Not to sound stupid, but I have tried to take the rim off the tractor, but with no success. What is the trick to taking the rim off so I can take it to a tire shop to get a new tube put in it??

I remember when I painted my Farmall MD (didn't want any scratches in the paint) and then tried to get those rims back on without scratching the paint on the rims or the hubs. That was certainly an impossibility as you have to work the lugs on the rims around the center casing. It is especially bad on the second one as there is less clearance with the second tire in the way (I jacked up the front, didn't drive on a block like I do with the Super H which is a lot easier). I forgot to mention that the tractor has the Schwartz (sp?) wide front end on it.

Pull the hubcap, bearing nut & bearing and remove the cast wheel center/rim/tire together. Install the rim/tire onto the wheel in desired position and repack wheel bearings, replace grease seal, install wheel & adjust bearing preload...install hubcap. Touch-up paint. This is exactly what I have to do in about 2-3 weeks.... Guy that repainted Dad's M spaced the frt wheels out almost as wide as they'll go.... Not prudent on a loader tractor! Plus the one set of bearings is loose.

Wow, I did not realize it was such an ordeal...

Someone put the rims back on my H in two different positions, one inside, one outside. All I did was jack up the front end of the tractor so the wheels were a few inches off the ground, removed the three bolts holding the rim to the hub, dropped the wheel straight down, swung the bottom out, then lifted straight up. It came off with no muss, no fuss, no Chinese puzzles.

Nat - The wheels on an H are considerably easier to remove - especially when fitted with stock 5.50 width tires. There's plenty of room between the bolster and the tire to maneuver things around.

An M with larger tires is another story. On mine (oversize 7.50 x 16 fronts) there's less than 1/2" of space between the front tires at the bottom, also between the top of the tires and the bolts that attach the boltster flange to the pivot shaft. Leaves very little clearance in which to wiggle the hub around and work it over the hub.

On mine it's easiest to loosen both wheels first, then swing one partially aside in order make more room to remove the other.

I'm presuming you have cast front hubs with 3 bolt centerless rims...

Anyway they can be a PITA to get off - sort of a Chinese puzzle kinda thing. But the wheels WILL come off over the hub.

---

First jack the front end - jack under the belly pump - or run the good tire up on a block of wood. (For safety chock both in front and behind both rear wheels and set the brakes...)

After removing all 3 wheel bolts, position the wheel so one of the lugs is in 3 o'clock position. Then lift the wheel, move it forward so the front lug clears the hub. Now wing the front side of the wheel toward you, then lift and move the wheel toward the rear of the tractor and off over the hub.

Good luck - with patience it will come off!

Patience. That is the key. Sometimes I can get the tire off in less than a minute and other times it takes over a half hour. You have to get one of the lugs over the hub and then wiggle and rotate until the wheel sort of falls off. Just make sure that the tractor cannot fall when you are trying to remove the wheel.
