Leaking belly pump drive seal .

This seal is on my 52 Super M . The belly pump is out and there is a 3 bolt flange there that appears to hold the drive shaft in the motor. Question is that seal as easy to change as it looks or is there more to it. Is there infact a seal behind that cover ? The shaft has to come out at the same time because it has a bigger drive end for the pump than what will slide over the seal . And most important who has one and how about a part # for it .

Jim - The pump drive seal is easy to change.

Hardest part is getting the slotted coupling off the front end of the shaft. It screws onto the tranny countershaft with standard (right hand) threads.

To remove: Engage the PTO then put a pipe wrench on it to keep it from turning. Now grab the coupling with another large pipe wrench - or place a suitable bar in the coupling slot - then tug or beat on the wrench. Once the coupling breaks free it will spin off easily by hand. Finally after the coupling is off, remove the 3 cap screws that hold the retainer to the tranny. The retainer and seal will then slide right off (the shaft will stay in place in the transmission).

Tip: Drain the tranny lube level down to below the level of the countershaft before removing the seal retainer!

See your CIH dealer for a replacement seal. Or take the IHC number off the old one and call your local bearing supplier. They can cross the number with a National Seal or Chicago Rawhide replacement - price is around $10 or so.

Note - The replacement seal will be about 1/2 the thickness of the original. You can either get two seals and install them one behind the other. Or simply install a single seal and position it in the retainer so the seal lip rides on an unworn section of the shaft.

I would suggest locking the PTO with a bar through a u-joint yoke (hook up your brush hog) to avoid damaging the splines.

I've had good luck with a large brass punch and a small sledge to get the coupling started.

We have broken them loose by putting the tractor in gear and setting the brakes.

Good suggestions!

Incidentally I've had success putting the tranny in 1st then setting the brakes in order to hold the countershaft from turning.

I've never worked on an M, but on an H which uses a similar belly pump the drive unscrews form the shaft, but requires some persuasion. It is necessary to remove the fornt part of the assembly, which contains the pump. Insert a piece of flat steel in the oil pickup at the bottom far enough up to wedge the gears, then use a bar to unscrew the drive.
