My dad did not check the coolant level and overheated his 1066 . Now coolant is getting into the crankcase. Would that mean a cracked head? Or are there other possible causes?

Nebraska Kirk....if the leak is thru an erosion hole in a sleeve (usually just above the oring grooves), replace them with a new set. Two methods for keeping this from happening again: 1) install a "water filter kit" which is not a filter at all, but a cake of additive for your coolant system that dissolves over a 400 hour change interval; or 2) add DCA additive to a quality antifreeze. Cavitational erosion of sleeves is a pretty common occurence in wet sleeved engines! Hope your rebuild goes well.

Well it is not liklely but could be , i would lean more to cavatation of the sleeves or posably a freeze plug in the top of the head under the valve cover . Two things to do , one pull the valve cover and look , Drop the oil pan and look and one other posiblity here could also be and injector well or tube however ya want to call it.

I've seen the oil coolers leak and get coolant in the oil, but if it got hot its a good chance its a warped or cracked head.

Naw, I don't think so.

Tractor got hot because the antifreeze was going into the oil in the first place and was low.

Typical old IH problem. Liners and/or seals are leaking; overhaul 'er.

Allen, it is the sleeve and/or seals alright. Dad drained the oil/water mix last night. I replaced the drain plug and this morning when I removed the plug more coolant came running out. I removed the head last night and the sleeves are hardly worn at all, I can still see the crosshatch pattern from the honing.

I plan on removing the pistons and sleeves, look them over, and if they are still seviceable, reuse them. Probably new rings too, I will have to see how things look when I get it taken apart.

If anyone has any more tips and advice, please let me know! Thanks a lot for all the advice, you guys are great :-)

Well we gave him a few places to check anyway. I just wanted to mention the oil cooler because I watched someone tear down a 766 engine only to find out it was the cooler all along.

Well normaly if it is and OIL COOLER YOU WILL HAVE OIL IN THE WATER . Since ya got 50-80 lbs of oil pressure and a whoppen 16-18 of water pressure the oil usualy fill the radator and i have seen them put somuch in the rad that it will blow out the overflow.

I guess it can go both ways.

With just a little leak you can get a pressurized cooling system after the engine is shut down and oil pressure drops.

But you'll still have oil in the water.

As tough as diagnosing over the phone is, trying to figure out some guy's problem when he is not around to expound on his first question get's tough too. Thinking through poorly described problems helps everyone with their trouble-shooting skills.

There's an interesting feature of this forum. Whoever asks the question does not even need to have his question answered for there to be a good exchange that a lot of people can learn from. Some of the most interesting information comes from discussions generated in trying to figure out what the original question was really supposed to be.

Whether the original questioner ever responds again, or even reads the responses is totally beside the point and unnecessary to the value of the forum. I'll bet there are a lot of people that read, laugh, get mad, etc. and never post a message.
