I am having a problem with my 56 farmall 300. I put an 8 volt battery in it. Had the generator rebuilt. Everything seemed to work ok. Put a new regulator on it. Battery went dead. Put old regulator back on but when hooking up the battery wire on the regulator the amp gauge goes to minus. Put a new amp meter on and now amp gauge goes way over to the plus side. Can anyone help point me in the right direction. Steam show is this weekend and would sure like to go.

The "cutout relay" inside your old voltage regulator is stuck closed, causing the discharge.

Likely, the internal "guts" are the opposite between your old and new ammeters, causing the opposite readings.

Swapping ALL the wires between the posts of the ammeter will correct it's reverse indication.

(Assuming your battery has been connected correctly all along, and the ground polarity didn't get swapped at the same time as you changed out the ammeter.)
