Trying to put pieces of a cast off H back together. It had several parts removed and I thought I had enough spare parts around the place to get it back running. Big obstacle now is it has 3 3/8" sleeves in it that look new. I have two sets of 3 7/16" pistons. Local machinist thinks boring it to accept my used pistons is excessive. Seems to me the sleeves should have plenty of material. Easy fix would be a set of 3 3/8 pistons but so far they are not easy to find. The machinist wants $100 to bore it-Any advice as to whether it can be bored out safely? Thanks-John

John, where in Texas are you located? I have friends who have H's and may have all the parts you need in exchange for a 12-pack.

You should check with your local auto parts store to see if new 3 7/16" sleeves are available for your new pistons. You can probably sell one set of those new pistons to offset the cost of the sleeves. You have everything else in the engine
first class and I wouldn't use any used pistons even if they're free. You have too much work involved to pull the engine apart again. Hal

John, stop and think about it. If exsisting pistons are 3 3/8 and your new piston are 3 7/16 , that is only 1/16th larger piston, which would mean you need to remove 1/32 all the way around in the sleeve. This figures out to only .03125 over bore.HTH

For Magman-John I don't care what type pistons as long as they are 3 3/8 inch and the rod pin fits. I have a rebuilt 8776 head that should work with any of the older style pistons. Don't even know if the 3 3/8 inchers had domes or step heads. I already bought an rebuilt oil pump, ground the crank and had the block reworked. Just can't justify putting more money in it than it will be worth. Just did not want it to go to scrap. John

The overbore kit lets you install the larger pistons by making the sleeves thinner, so I would think you bore the sleeves that you have and you would end up with basically the same thing as an overbore kit.
