350 U Sputtering under load

I've got a 350 Utility that developed a sputtering problem at high RPM but only under load. I soaked/cleaned/blew out and rebuilt the carb (I get good responses from idle and high speed adjustments), adjusted the float, replaced the gas line, took out the in-line fuel filter and cleaned the sediment bulb. I have not drained and cleaned the fuel tank yet but it looks clean.

I can idle it high with no discernable problems. It runs at low idle like a dream. As soon as I put it under load, it acts like it's starving for fuel. Ideas???

Is the coil acting up? Is there just the smallest of clog/debris in the tank probibiting the max fuel flow? I've adjusted the high speed screw at high RPM and can find the sweet spot but can't seem to give it any more fuel by adjusting it under load.

I had to borrow the cousin's John Deere this weekend to get any work done. Don't want that to happen again. I hope no one recognized me.

THanks - Jay

This is a long shot, but check to make sure that you do not have an intake manifold gasket leak. This can manifest itself as hard to start or needing to use the choke longer than usual. Mine had a real minor leak between the middle two cylinders. I accidently stumbled upon it one day. Once fixed, I had to adjust the carb and she ran like a champ.

Good luck. I still miss my little red tractor.

When mine sputters under load it means it is time to put the battery charger on it. My amp meter is on the plus side, but it doesnt seam to be enough to keep the battery charged full.

Hi Jay, back in the 50s when we had a 300U on our farm, when it started to sputter under load it was time for a new set of spark plugs.

Try replacing the points and setting the timing.

The high speed screw is a "cut" screw. It doesn't have a "sweet spot." Max power is obtained with 5 turns out, you can turn it in for better economy, but it should not be adjusted like the H carb -- (in until rough, out until smooth). That will cause it to sputter under load. If you have it 4 or so turns out, you have other problems. I doubt if it is fuel flow, except that some inline filters can cause problems. I wouldn't use one unless there is absolutely no other way to keep the fuel clean. Sometimes you have to soak them a long time, be sure you use carb cleaner, not parts cleaner.
