Super A just won't quit !

Got a '53 Super A that won't shut down when I turn the switch off. I tried changing out the toggle switch, sure that was the problem. Cranked her back up, and the new switch won't shut it down either! I finally choked it off by holding the brake and letting the clutch out in 1st gear, then pulled off the battery cable to stop it from draining. What's going on ? Do I need to call a priest?

Bob, you are 100% correct. The 1N4004-30 I used is only rated at 1 amp, 400 PRV. Gross overkill because all the alternator needs is to be excited in the field coils. I ran my 240U about three months with one inline to the #1 alternator terminal before breaking the tractor down to repaint. That tells me that it doesn't take a lot of current to excite the alternator. Heck! I can parallel all 30 and be good for 30 amps. Lets don't get excited anybody. LOL. Dave

Thanks for the help. It has a " button shaped something" in line where the diode is shown in the picture. Are you saying that the diode may have failed, letting the alternator feed voltage back into the ign. system that would keep it running with the switch on or off and the battery disconnected? I"m a little slow. The ignition system seems like magic to me. Can I get one of these diodes at the local Napa, or at an electronics place?

Thanks for the help.

An industrial electronics place should have the diodes.

If instead of an alternator problem it is a magneto, the kill switch is not grounding it properly.

Assuming!!! it was changed to 12V a JIM-PAK 1N4004-30 silicon rectifier will work too. White band to #1 terminal also. About $4.00 for 30 so don't worry about spares. Look for 29 other people having the same problem and send them one. Dave.

Note...

1N4004 is rated at 1 Amp forward current. My suggested 1N5408 is rated at 3 Amps forward current.

Rarely, I have had 1 Amp diodes fail in this application, so I have been using the 1N5408's, with a rated forward current of 3 Amps, and a PIV of 1000 Volts. This is WAY overkill, but will take any voltage and current spikes the charging system can dish out.

I have yet to have one of the 1N5408's fail, and they're not expensive, either.

If it has been changed to 12 volts with an alternator it needs a diode in the wire that goes from the ignition to the the field coils in the alternator. It could be backfeeding from the fields to the coil. When you kill it in gear use 4th instead of ist.

If Will's guess is correct, and it is a 12-Volt conversion, with an alternator like this, here's how to solve the problem:
