Splitting a farmall H (need help)

I have a 1943 H (serial 130288) and it has a very stuck piston. I have tryed almost everything but nothing has worked, i have come to the conclusion that i will have to split it. My qustion is do I have to remove the clutch and flywheel be for I seperate it, or can the whole works come out as a one unit. If any one has any tips on splitting that would be help full too.

I was just thinking of a way to get that bad boy free and let me know if you try it or it works. Take a round piece of metal that will fit in on top of the piston perferable 1/4" probly Get a GOOD Air Impact chissle with a good blunt chissle. About 125 or more pressure on a good big compressure and some ear protection and let that bad boy loose all around that metal. In my trade I have used them alot and the vibration will loosen the parts or your brain. LOL JON

I have been down both roads...with those that are stuck just a little...then the concoctions mentioned are helpful...but occasionally, you get a good one and you simply are not going to get the piston out by soaking...It has rusted in there so bad that it is just like a weld. When that happens, you can count on the sleeve being bad when you get it out...so badly pitted etc that it is worthless. You can follow the directions regarding the holes and saw or you can do the holes and burn it--that is melt with the electrc welder and special rod. The directions below about separating are good...and I want to only caution you that the front end is very heavy. I like to take the radiator off...and hook the front wheels to a hoist then remvoe the rails...after blocking up the rear section. Then remove the rails. Get your hoist attached to the engine then remove the bolts 4 +2...one outside and one inside the starter housing. The last one I took apart that was really stuck...I wound up pushing the piston and sleeve both out of the engine from the bottom. I dont think anyone responded but the clutch and all comes off with the motor.

HAVE YOU TOOK THE PAN OFF AND UNHOOKED THE ROD FOR THAT CYLINDER YET? If not you need to and turn the motor over a little so the piston can go down a little then give it a few good whacks with a piece of hard wood and a mall. JON

yes I have tried all of that, it spent about 4 months at my shop class at high school. We tried wacking it and letting it soak in different penetrating oils.

no luck

I also need to replace the ring gear on the flywheel.

No need to split the tractor just yet, split the piston instead. Start by drilling some holes into the top of the piston. The holes need to be close to the outside edge of the piston, but not right at the edge. Once you get a large enough hole, then insert a hack saw blade down through the hole and begin cutting your way over to the edge. It will be a slow process. You need to cut all the way through the skirt of the piston, but be careful to NOT cut into the sleeve, or at least do not go through the sleeve. You may find it necessary to make a second cut in order to take a "wedge" out of the piston. The piston rings will be next to impossible to cut through, so you might need to do a little gentle "breaking" of things, but do be careful that you don't attempt to pry against the cylinder wall as you can easily break a hole into the wall, and then you will have scrap iron.

Just for the record, it would be interesting to know what various penetrating oils you have tried. Personally, I have tried every one that has been recommended on this board, and have not yet found even one that actually did anything but drain my wallet.

liquid wrench
even set the diesel fuel on fire

but nothing worked

Rusty, I've had good luck with tranny fluid and or turpentine. So far it has worked on 9 out of 10 engines I have used it on. And even the 10th one I had only one piston that didn't pop loose and when I did get that one out sleeve and all came out

Old, I personally know several folks that have used the diesel fuel mixed with either brake fluid and/or turpentine, and yes, it did work for them, so I do beleive that concotion can and will work, but not everytime. I have one H that has been soaking in diesel fuel and brake fluid, and at times turpentine, for at least 3 years now and no results. I have also tried the infamous P.B. Blaster, liquid wrench, WD-40, you name it, I have tried it, and the pistons are still stuck. Sometimes you just gotta get out the hammer and break 'em out.

here is what i usually do, I soak the tractor with what ever is handy. Mainly diesel. I usually don't have the tractors at my shop so when i buy them i start soaking them, even fill up the manifold wait about a week and then go load it on a trailer make sure all tires are up. Leave put the tractor in high gear, (hope the clutch doesn't slip and leave the chains a little loose. Usually (so far 9 out of 11) it is loose by the time I hit hte shop. You need to make sure that you have blocks fastened to the trailer so the it doesn't roll of it it brakes loose. You should try it. I am a shop teacher and this is by far the easiest way. I think if you pull motors you have a harder time unless you can get it in a press. I have broken off a spark plug and welded a air chuck on it and used oil presser to push the piston down. some use hydralic press. what ever works.

I understand the concept of leaving the chains a bit loose but let me be the first to jump all over you for even thinking of it. It is not a good idea, it is very dangerous, if the highway patrol or the D.O.T. boys catch you it will be very expensive for you, and the fact that you are a shop teacher and teaching these methods to your students is an even more scary thought. Any time you haul a tractor or anything else, it MUST BE TIED DOWN SECURELY to the point that it cannot even wiggle. What school do you teach at? Maybe someone should be talking to the school board?

I leave cables fasten to the tractor, no way for brake away. I have tire blockes screwed right to the trailer bed a bout 3 inches just enough for the tire can have a little rock. Never had a tractor move or slip side to side. Have total of 4 chains/cables in each corner to hold tractor. Works well.

Yep theres always that one that no matter what you try you just plain need a BFH to get them loose. I have an H right now soaking with tranny fluid but it also doesn't have a starter on it and its not loose yet. Been soaking for a month or so. I also have done the pull the head off and lite the stuff up which works some times but as with them all not always

If you decide to split the tractor, just remove all the linkage to the engine and block up the clutch housing securely. Hook on to the engine with a hoist/end loader/backhoe/ or whatever will lift the engine. Remove the 4 bolts on each side that hold the frame rails on, and the long, exposed bolt on the rear of the bell housing. Remove the starter and take out the bolt hiding in the hole where the starter mounts. Loosen the four bolts on the front of each side rail and roll the front end forward. (Much easier with two men :-)) You need to drop the rear of the rails a little as you roll forward, to clear the oil filter mounting. With the front bolster & rails out of the way, pick up on the engine until you have the weight, and then pull the dowel pins on each side, close to where the side rails bolted on. I've done this with the radiator on, and with it removed. Its safer for the radiator with it removed. Have fun...ken
