Farmall 504 engine replacement question

Hi,

To say I'm out of my element on a tractor discussion forum would be an understatement. To make a long story short, we have a Farmall 504 that is such a workhorse around the farm, and especially great for raking hay. Well, our nephew completely destroyed the engine yesterday...always in a big hurry to stay way ahead of everyone in anything he's doing. I am distraught about this, needless to say, as its the only tractor I actually enjoy driving to do hay work.

I feel like its going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack to locate a new engine block for this tractor, and it is just in too much of a mess to even begin to repair without fully replacing the engine. Do I have any hope of getting this tractor back up and running? It also has sentimental value, as it has been in the family since it was purchased new many years back. Thanks for any suggestions or advice on this that you can share.

Here he is...sadly parked in the field, with the wheels conspicuously missing (you can glimpse them there in the back of the photo), waiting to go back to work. Blast it all!

I have contacted several of the salvage yards/machine shops on the list and I'mkeeping my fingers crossed that we will locate an engine soon. I appreciate the help, and commiseration!

If you can find a usable block that isn't cracked
or has not been bored too much, you could have your local auto machine shop rebuild the engine. Here's a web site for a list of auto machine shops in GA. Hal

I received an email from Burgh Implement in PA
on a 504 block. He thinks he may have an engine block. He needs your casting number from the old block if you contact him. His toll free number is 1-800-369-6313 or email him at Junkman@Burgh Implement. Hal

Thanks, tractor vet...I'm in south GA, and its not the best part of the country for finding what you need for "old" tractors. This forum is terrific though...so I won't give up hope!

Thank you ejr and Allan...I appreciate your help, and am keeping my fingers crossed that the old 504 will get back in the hay fields again soon. But I know that "soon" is not really a part of the equation when fixing old tractors! This one has always been so dependable, and we use it a lot as it is indeed a very handy little tractor...I'd hate to see its demise!

Thanks so much,

Belinda

In one of my catalogs I see a rebuilt short block for 1800 dollars.A short block is block new sleeves and pistons, bearings, reground cam shaft. They have rebuilt heads also use your own manifolds and carb. You may have to pay a core charge if your old engine is totaly trashed.

Linda,

This is not a problem, so just calm down. Sounds like the old tractor was kinda in need of attention anyway if it blew.

Go to a salvage yard, tell 'em what you have and buy a used engine, take it to a machine shop and get it overhauled. Put 'er back in and you're back in business.

If you can't find a used engine, my email is open and I can find you one in very short order.

I know how ya feel when they go down, but it is all part of this "old-iron" game and happens all the time. :>)

Allan
