It seems some don't care for the IT manuals at all and others go by no others.....
Are the IT manuals written in more of a "how to" format than the IH manuals? What are the negatives to the IT ones; what are the positives?
I have the IH manuals but have never even seen an IT. I'm wondering if I ought to supplement my "library" with an IT? (Super A tractors)

I use both and have found them to be useful.
I use the IT manual as sort of a check list when doing a task. If I get to a part I need more info on I open the Blue Ribbon manual for some more detail for a particular part. Then if that does not Get-R-Done. I run in here and ask.

its hard to Task your job off the blue ribbon manual. too much info some times but its great when you need that info.

I have both IT and Blue Ribbon Repair manuel for my SMTA. I use both along with the parts book and operator's manuel. As mentioned the IT is not as model specific as the IH book. I do like the overall info in the front of the IT manuel.

I'll tell you this. Several years ago I owned an IH 856 diesel, Somehow I lost the original owners manual, and thought I could replace it with a full shop manual from IT. The shop manual is supposed to go into detail for making all repairs. Guess what? The original owners manual had much more information about making repairs than the IT SHOP manual. The IT manual even mentioned that if you needed more info, you should contact your local dealer. I refuse to ever buy another IT manual.

IT manuals are inexpensive and there are some things in them that are not in the IH manuals. It says on the cover that they are "written for the experienced mechanic by professionals". They do not go into great detail and assume you know what they leave out. IH and IT complement each other. I would not buy IT if I did not have the IH manuals, though. Unless you are indeed an experienced mechanic (who only needs the specifications, not the procedure, for what they are doing anyway), they are not "stand alone" manuals.

I go by no others because I have I&T manuals to cover letter series through 450 which is all I have and I can keep the tractors running with them. For most things, you don't look at the manual, just take it apart and put it back together. For instance, the manuals are not much help in splitting a tractor. You just have to take off what is in the way. Same thing to pull a water pump. But to know there is a standpipe inside the A fan pulley housing to gauge the oil level, for THAT you need a manual.

I do have some old original service manuals but they really don't say much at all, just intersting reading.

I&T is like a Chilton's automotive manual. You will find one manual covers A, SA, B, C, and SC, while another covers H, SH, M, MD, SM, SMD, SMTA, SMTAD, W4, SW4, W6, WD6, SW6, SWD6, W6TA, WD6TA, W9, WD9. Maybe all those are covered in one manual.

They are "How To", are not "always" right, and you have to read carefully because there is a lot of information crammed into each section of text.

I have both manuals but very seldom use the IT's.
It seems to me the IT's leave out information that would be very usefull in making some repairs.

IMHO, the IT manuals leave a LOT to be desired. They try to get as MANY tractors in one book (I kind of think that their criteria for lumping different tractors in one book is something like "these were all painted red . . .") The specs and settings are fairly detailed and quite comprehensive, but when they try to explain how to assemble, or rebuild a component, they will describe a particular model, and say something like "others are similar . . ." yeah, like they were painted the same color . . .
The IH manuals are much more specific.

The I-T manuals are made for people who can read between the lines so to speak. They leave out small things here and there that to manaul that where printed 30 plus years ago didn't, but that was also when things where simpler and farmers didn't have a good back ground on how engines etc worked
