Some friends were joing around saying I would need a 55 gallon drum of WD-40 for my tractor. But another one, with a serious suggestion, mentioned PB Blaster instead.

Have any of you ever used it?

sea-foam penetrating spray is awesome, so is "pen" made by state chemical, makes blaster look like water.

I think the stuff works great, and if you have a couple of hours to kill, read everything on the can! I did find one problem with it, though. I had the heads off a drag motor a few years ago and thought I would spray down the cylinders to keep them from rusting while apart. After about two weeks, I wiped out the cylinder bores before re-assembly, and the cylinder walls were actually pitted where the PB was pooled! For some reason, it attacked the cast iron and made pock marks you could feel. It wasn't bad enough to require repair, but I'm glad I caught it when I did. I'll never do that again.

I was a automotive mechanic for 8 years, and work on old old old stuff in my spare time. To be perfectly honest with you, I have used every penetrant you can think of, and they all work. I feel that PB blaster is a good penetrating oil (better than thrust and WD-40) but you need to use it properly. With any penetrating oil, it needs time to work. Even 10-15 minutes is a big help. Also keep applying it, when in a hurry apply, let it sit for a few minutes and apply again. Do this for a little while and try the bolt. In all my experience though, if a can says penetrating oil on it, it will work. As with what some of the others have already said, if you"re in a hurry (as I usually am) NOTHING beats a torch. Good Luck

Use it? Couldn"t live without it. I freed up a B that sat outside for about 20 years with it.
Have tried a bunch of other things, but Blaster is the best in my book.

You might buy some Kroil as well. It is really not a major decision to pick a penetrant. I keep everything from Wal-Mart penetrant, Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster, and Kroil around and use them based on how much money I want to invest in the task at hand. I also use lots of Marvel Mystery Oil in a squirt can. It is probably no better than ATF but I like the smell. I use it to lubricate bolts before putting them back together and will always put it on lug nuts and rusted bolts, etc not to penetrate but to keep the nut from galling as it is coming off the rusted threads. Getting started is one thing, bu tkeeping a nut moving on a long screw also takes lubricant.

I used tranny juice 30 years ago when restoring a Farmall A. That's with the help a 2X2 of oak and a big hammer. For rusted nuts I used an acetylene/oxygen torch for heating them red hot.
I wouldn't trade a good torch for a train load of
penetrating oil. Hal

Dremel tool. Best rusted nut release agent I've found to date. Sometime repeated dosing of Thrust over a long period (days, weeks, months) will get old anteekie, rusted nuts/bolts apart. But for when you want to get the job done RIGHT NOW, Dremel tool and its itty bitty cutting disks together with a face mask to keep the old eyes intact is what I use. (I'm the impatient type on my days off.)

HI MIKE, #1 YOUR cd WENT OUT YESTERDAY LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU GET IT? #2 When pb first came in my area I worked as a mechanic in a body shop the guy brought his foam cup and put everything he had in it and the PB was the only thing that melted the cup. I have been using it since the late 80s. I buy it in the 1 gallon can at tractor supply company for $18.00. If you are interested and cant find it I will get it and ship it to you the next time they run a sale. The best I have ever used working in different shops my whole life was from a company called thrust made by casle. Now I just called my brother becuase I could not remember the name he owns a body shop and he said the best new thing to come along is made by CRC and is called freeze off says he will not buy anything elase now except for that and pb to help after using thje freeze off. I owned 5 tractors that has sat in fence rows for at least 10 years, and Ive used PB blaster on all of them. But my patiench is short. Penatrating oil must penatrate. The only sucess I had is a peice of steel and a 20lb sledge on top of the pistons.I've never broke any thing yet.

Way to go Mike! Now we'll all be throwin' fisticuffs over which penetrating oil works better. To be honest with ya though...penetrating oil is alot like our wives and girlfriends...some of us just like different ones, no matter what the general population thinks. I have used PB Blaster with good results, but as you can see, not everyone holds that same thought. Liquid Wrench is the old standby and has a following accordingly.

Good luck with the new project though...which ever penetrating oil you decide on!

I used it a few years ago to free-up an MD with a stuck motor. I tried every other mixture that has been mentioned on this site (kroil, WD-40, ATF, diesel fuel, kerosine, etc.). I even tried filling the cylinder with diesel fuel and lighting it to warm the cylinder. Nothing seemed to work. Then I filled the cylinder with PB blaster and left it alone for a few days (as with the other solvents). After two days, I noticed a pool of black liquid under the engine (oil pan was off at this point) and the level of solvent in the cylinder was noticibly less. I continued to add PB Blaster to the cylinder for the next few days and noticed that it continued to flow between the piston and cylinder at an increasing rate. In my opinion, the stuff works great.

I'm pretty much with Allan. It works but for the money tranny fluid works 10 times better and you can buy 3 or 4 times as much for the same price of the PB. Only thing is the PB camoes in spray cans and the tranny fluid doesn't. But if you want something loose the tranny fluid works far, far better. It also works better and it cheaper then the WD-40

Can one of them rechargeable aerosal cans spray that ATF. That might be the cats meow if the ATF works as good as you say it does. All you need is an air compressor then to pressurize the spray.

Maybe that would work but I also guess an old paint gun would also do it. I've had very good luck with tranny fliud over the years. I use it from every thing to unlock stuck engines to rusted up bolts etc.

It's nothin' but colored water. I've never seen PB Blaster loosen anything yet. Went thru four cans of the stuff and finally just gave up on it.

Use a real penetrating oil. Just can't beat the old Liquid Wrench.

While I can't say how you're using it, I can say that the effects of any penetrating oil are rarely, if ever, instant. Penetrants need time to work; you can't spray the bolt then slap a wrench on it.

My personal experience with PB is on a very rusty H with many stuck bolts. Because it's out at my folks' place and I only make it out there about once a month, the penetrant has time to soak in and do some good. When I get a stuck bolt, I spray it with PB a few times, and come back a few weeks later. 99 times out of 100, the bolt is free.

The only instant penetrant is a good old flame wrench: An oxy-acetylene torch, and even those don't always work.

It works so good that is all I use. 4 aerosal cans of PB Blaster is about equal to a 55 gallon drum of WD 40 in usefulness in my opinion. I have a can of WD 40 that I can not even give away to any of my friends either. 8( just my thoughts
