How many holes for this H hood?

You can't see the Muffler, but it's got a hole to the left of the pic behind the... air cleaner I think? Two holes on the top of the steering rod bump that don't seem to have a use. And that... thing on the right. I don't have a clue what that is.

So, the question: This was a distilate engine. I'm going to restore it. So what holes NEED to be there? Or should I restore it as a straight gas motor and just get a new hood? However, the hood is pretty damaged. Look at this on the left front side of it. There is also a pretty big dent down this side just out of view in this following pic:

I agree with prior posters....keep the hood original. And you want to keep greasing the steering parts regularly as it gets expensive when you start replacing parts.
I have a '51 H with factory wide front. Mine is a gas only tractor, but it's a great machine.

Mike; that is a good looking hood in both pictures. The dent should be able to be pulled and re-formed. that little tear is nothing, a mig or gas welder could fix that with no sweat and a little grinding/sandpaper will have it looking good. Ought to see some of the stuff I started with on a recent haybine. If you want pristine original and can afford it the ok, but this is very do-able. Good luck and post pictures. Bob

Mike, (Just reducing confusion) When refering to a vehicle (even in a picture) behind is considered to the rear of the vehicle, right is operators right, etc., Thus the exhaust hole is in front of the air cleaner hole. This looks like a perfectly restorable hood (unless there are parts of it that are smashed or cut out with a torch, even then, it looks good in the hard to fix areas) All these holes are correct. Good going. JimN

Two small holes on top of the steering bump I believe were to access grease zerks on the steering support and u-joint on the steering shaft. "Thing" on the right that shows in your pic is the top of the small tank that gasoline went in to start the tractor before switching to distillate. Can't see the hole behind(in front of?) the air breather.

As for holes that "need" to be there....depends. If you want it original, all the original holes need to be there in my opinion, along with the little tank that held the gas, even if you don't use it.

If you want to get rid of the starting tank, fill in the holes you don't currently use, etc., then it won't be "original" it'll be a "custom".

Again- it's your tractor, it's up to you.
