Put a rebuilt short block (new crankshaft, standard mains & rod brs., rods remaned, pistons/sleeves, cambushings & line bored.)in a 544 Hydro. Engine was running when we started this project, it had some brass in pan, so thought we'd put an all ready to go engine in !! Now it will not run I've double checked, triple checked timing, valves & pump. We have fuel, will run on ether, but will not take off. I have rebulit many of these (D239 engines) over the years and never had this happen. Any ideas or other things you can think of??? Thanks Jim

I'm pretty sure on the pump timeing, once had a D282 180 out, you remember things like that. I'm going to check with local Case-IH dealer today see if I can look at his book.

Well if the timeing is correct and the pump is in time and the one thing that i will never ever do is use either . The only thing that comes to my mind is that it has the wrong pistons in it of the head was not done correctly and the compression ratio is way off and if ya bought this engine from some rebuilder then who the he-ll-o knows what they stuck in it or even if the timeing gears were makerd correctly. In all my years of doing engines i have only bought one and that was at a customers request and guess what that was the one that i had more trouble with and was a nightmare .

Tractor Vet, I rebuilt the engine from a stripped block, used same P/S's i've used many times before. the valve timeing I checked by book and it is within specs. Pump is timed to 14 degrees BTC. This engine has an ether aid start.
I have no way to check compression, but that is an idea.

Now you could have gotten the wrong pistons and the comp. distance is down to far Pull one of the new ones and compair to one of the old ones here again it would not be the first time that what is in the box is what is suppose to be in there . I have learned over the years to check and double check as ya don't get what ya paid for . Also check your head and how the valve set in the seat as i can not off the top of my head remember if the valve stick out from the surface of the head or are below as on the german engines or any diesel this has a bunch to do with how well they will start i had a hard time with one machine shop over a 806 head because the put the valves in to deep and this tractor was hard starting on a hot day and lacked power . they had to redo the head and install all new seats to bring the valves back to where the BOOK called for then it would start down below freezen with out either and yes i know that they came from the factory with and either assist and do know how many engines that i have pulled down because of blow by because of the top ring or the top two rings were broken . If a german engine is in good order they will start with setting the shut down control to Cold start as this set the pump in a over fuel set . So like i said check comp. distance on the piston and the shape of the top of the piston with and old one and also check the valve protrusion or resession as to what ever that head needs and one other thing make sure that ya have the injector bleed all the way hope this helps . I am going to supper.

Enjoy your supper. You got my attention, now where can I get these figures? I had an IH service manual, but for the life of me can't remember where I left it, or loaned it to. Thanks again for your input. Jim

Well the spec's are in the service manual or a real good machine shop should have the spec's . Also while eating what was left over from Fridays supper i got to thinking also check the placement of the ring groves on the new piston as to make sure that the top ring is not cut tolow as this also affects compression ratio and are you sure that the injection pump is in time as i had this convershion with a friend on a 1066 for three or four days before i went over to his friends only to find out that he installed the pump 180 out . Since i can not see for myself we are both pullen at straws here.
