This is for Allan in NE (and anyone else who can shed some light on the matter)

Allan,

My tractor is a Farmall 656. The manual says there are two basic front axles for this tractor. One gives a tread width range of 50 to 74 inches and the other gives a tread width range of 56 to 80 inches (both with the wheel concaves turned in). Since I cannot even get to the 56 inch setting, I assume that I have the larger width axle. The book also mentions a really wide axle that goes up to 120".

I have also seen the parts manual refer to the above two axle ranges, so if they made a mistake in the manuals they made it both places.

My tire size is 7.50-16. The manual says the 56 to 80" tread width applies with 6.50-16 tires. Do you think the tires themselves would create that much difference (I am measuring about 60" for the narrowest setting).

Also, you asked if I was measuring the tread width at the top or bottom. Which is the correct place to measure?

Also, I am pretty sure that the knees and hubs are original because they still have legible part numbers on them and they match with the parts book.

Thanks,

Don

Don: I misread your last thread, to much of a hurry.

I had both a 560 and 656 and during the year I had them I ran them on 72" centers. On 72" centers both tractors had 3 holes of inner tube exposed. My 300 was the same. If you want to compare I've forgotten distance between hole but that should tell you how narrow mine would go. My tractors were bought new thus everything was factory. I'm thinking 60" would be the inner limit.

The holes are 2" apart, which would make the tread width 60" with them at the narrowest position. That is about what mine is, too.
Thanks!

Don

Don: It's been awhile, thus I couldn't remember whether those holes were exactly 2" centers. I just play with the little offsets now and know they are 2" centers. Yes, that is right,if I had 3 holes exposed on each side at 72" wheel tread, take away 6" on each side and one has 60". I know those tractors were all factory as we bought them new.

Sorry I misread your last thread, I could have given you this two days ago. This blasted computer is working so bad, I tend to hurry when I do get on line. Phone company came and installed new lines, didn't help, today this is going back to the guy who installed the $3.00 modem as Allan called it.

Hugh,

No need to apologize! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Mine has two holes exposed on each side and I have been trying with no luck to move them out farther. I just discovered yesterday that they have been welded fast! So, I have a real mess on my hands!

Hope you get your computer working better!

Thanks again,

Don

Are you measuring from the center of one tire to the center of the other tire? That"s the correct way to do it. It really doesn"t matter if you measure at the top or bottom or front or back, as you will only see about a 1/4" difference depending on where you measure. Also, you may have some non-original wheels. I think the IH ones had a little different offset. I know I"ve run into a couple wheels/tires off of wagons and such that I"ve tryed to use as spares on IH tractors, and they ended up rubbing the spindle.
