Choke Rod on H too short

I recently bought a choke rod at a swap meet. The seller said it came off a farmall M, so I thought it would be long enough, but its about one inch too short...Is there a special way these rods are suppose to be bent and run up to the carb. Where does it go, over the fresh air tube to the carb, or under...I think its me that is making this choke rod seem too short, so any help would be greatly appreciated, or was I sold a choke rod for a smaller model farmall H?? Is that possible...
Thanks
Scott.

H and M are different. As Rusty said, there were two rods. But, my parts book does not show a serial break. First one is 51822D, 46 5/8" long, the newer one is 357 420 R1, 45 27/32" (measured in 32nds for a choke rod?) long. I don't think the older one (D number) is the one Rusty mentioned so there may be a third, because that is the one size fits all number in the OEM Tractor Parts catalog. I guess, but am by no means sure, that the R1 number was for the very late M's shortly before the Super M came out, as some changes in the controls were made at that time, and that the D number fits most M's. I realize that none of this will solve your immediate problem. Someone else can throw in their $ worth.

CNKS, thank you, I meant to say that there were two different styles that I am familiar with, and quite possibly could be even more.

No need for thanks--I went out and measured the one on my M and it is close to 50 inches long. Looks factory, but who knows? I think Howard has the best idea.

It is possable that the M uses a shorter rod than the H. Just cut it and weld in a short piece. I seldom find one that hasn't been repaired.

Depending on what year the H was made, there were at least two different configurations on the choke rod, so it is quite possible that the choke rod you have is indeed too short. On all models and years the choke rod is supposed to run over the top of the air intake tube, as well as over the top of the battery box cover. On the earlier models, the choke rod ended at and was supported by a bracket mounted to the rear tank support. The later models ran the rod all the way back to a bracket mounted on the steering post, which also held the on-off switch for the ignition.

On the front fuel tank support-left side-near the top should be a 1/4" hole. On my H, there was a 1" long piece of half inch angle iron bolted to this hole on the outside of the support. The bolt went through near the bottom of the angle and the choke rod went through a smaller hole above the bolt, on the side of the angle that faced out. This little angle is missing on the other Hs that I have, and I had trouble getting choke rods to fit until I found this little piece of angle. ken
