What"s the best head gasket sealer to use, good quality aluminum paint or copper spray-a-gasket? I am replacing the head gasket on a 460 diesel and have been told to also use a good quality aluminum paint on both surfaces (let dry some until tacky). I also have found a spray copper spray gasket that is a high temp sealant. It says it will fill minor irregularities and prevent hot spots. It says to apply it to both sides of the gasket, flange surfaces, threaded fittings, etc. Will either work fine? I am having some trouble finding good quality aluminum paint. The aluminum paint I have found is really just high-temp paint that is the color of aluminum (so they tell me). I have had the head machined and it is ready to go back on. Just need to decide what to use to seal it in addition to the regular gasket. Thanks.

If your head has been milled[flattened], you should have no trouble. Did you check the block for flat? If it's essentially flat, Coppercoat should be enough.

The head was checked and planed. They said it was not warped, but had some "low spots". It doesn't look like they took much off. The block looks very good too. There are some spots that are not exactly level, but, overall, it looks good. Guess I'll go with the copper spray and double-coat it. Thanks for the input. Not sure if I'll coat the head bolt threads with anything. Seems to me, they ought to be dry, but I am not positive. There may be something out there that will help them grip.

I have always used forma gasket tack spray its red in a spray can used for those type of aplications, Well I have always developed leaks also. The H I built last year got copper spray on it and so far so good but I only have about 10 hours on it. I have been also told by the guy at the dealer that has been working and maching on Ihs all his life that to use nothing. If its a aluminum or metal gasket on both sides that you dont need to put adheasave or retourque . But he says to use a little good quality teflon pipe dope on the studs that go into the water jackets. So I guess you deside. I AM NOT RETOURQING MY H THIS TIME. THEY DONT RETORQUE CARS AND TRUCKS DO THEY? The old cardboard or cork gaskets used to need it but like I said if its alum or metal on both sides then its suposed to be like the newer cars and trucks. Just my opionion.JON

In the days before the torque to yeld head bolts came out yes retorque was a must and on your H yes it is a must . And yes use Copper coat or Hy tack , myself i use the copper coat as it is one of them things that i have used for over 40 years and since i am set in my ways it works for me.

I used the copper head gasket sealer in the spray can. Why not use the product that is specifically made for the application?

Kind of what I thought, but I have heard of good quality aluminum paint working extremely well. A guy who farms north of here keeps saying to use the aluminum paint. So, I thought if that worked better (for some reason) than the copper spray sealer, I would go that route. I have never used the copper spray before. It says surfaces can be precoated in advance for convenience and to wait 30 seconds inbetween coats, meaning, I guess, that more than one coat should be applied. It says that it is specially designed for exhaust manifolds, cylinder heads and turbocharger flanges. Thanks.
