656 tread width

I have a 656 with a wide front end. My question is where is tread width measured? From the center of the wheels or to the insides of the wheels? My owner's manual says that the tread width should be adjustable from 56" to 80", but with the wheels all the way in the minimum tread width is 62" (measured from the center of the tires). Anyone have any idea why the discrepancy?

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don,

Lots of things come to mind.

International or Farmall? Narrow based wide front or the really wide one? Original front-end or a replacement/aftermarket unit?

Tire size? Have the wheels, knees and/or hubs ever been replaced? Many parts interchange and look the same but are actually different.

Bulldog effect: Are you measuring at the ground or the top of the tire?

And lastly, owners' manuals are always written, published, packaged for shipment and sent out to destinations before the first unit is even actually built. So, finding a mistake or two in an owner's manual is not all that rare. :>)

Hi Allan,

It is the Farmall version. The tire size is 7.50-16. I think the knees and hubs are original because I can find the correct IH part numbers stamped on them. I am measuring at the top of the tire -- where should I be measuring?

Also, since the tread width is measured from center to center of the wheels, does tire size even matter?

Do you know what the width of the center tube should be? Mine measures 42.5"

Thanks,

Don

Hugh is correct for the rear wheels. I believe your front axle has pressed steel wheels, the 6 inch difference you have is probably due to your wheels being dished out (provided they are); they can be mounted either way. Only a guess as I don't have a 656.

I have the wheels dished in. At their absolute narrowest setting, the front wheel tread is 62 inches when measured center to center.

They may not be the original wheels -- I bought new ones for my 460U, had trouble matching them. Offsets are not the same on all. Unless you really have to have them as the book says, just use as is.

Don: Wheel tread is measured from center to center. The 4" discrepancy is probably due to which side of the cast center you have the lugs.

There is also very likely a difference if you have 34" pressed steel wheels. There could be a difference if someone has replaced the 38" rims with newer or wider rims
