I have a Farmall M that has sat idle for 5 years and the inside of the gas tank got really rusty. Its loose rust. I have the tank off it. Whats the best way to thoughly clean it and keep it from rusting again? Can I put some rocks in it, agitate it, and power wash it out good? Is there a coating to put in there that wont peel off with time? Thanks! Dave

An easy way to do it if you have the tank off the tractor is to pour a couple gallons of diesel fuel in it. Then, pour a carton of BBs (the ones that look like little cartons of milk) in it and slosh it around. The BBs and the diesel will scour the tank out pretty good. Do this a couple times a day for a couple days. When I did the tank from my "H" I sat it atop a large rubber trash can for support. Made it easy to slosh around by rocking the trash can back and forth. The BBs are small enough to get behind the baffle and are inexpensive. Hope this helps.

The best gas tank cleaner is a two part system sold by Yamaha Motorcycle dealers. Called "Rust removal, and "Rust Conditioner". Also body shop supply houses have a product called "Metal Prep" that will work. Both contain phosphoric acid which eats the rust. DON'T use an interior coat product until you have all the rust out. It won't adhere to rusty metal. And certainly don't use it unless you have a leak! After it's clean, check for leaks. Rare to have a leak. If it's tight you are good to go without taking a chance on those coating products. If they don't work right you have a REAL problem!

We clean it with muratic acid, then pressure wash the inside, dry it out, then use a good tank liner. We use a red tank liner, cannot remember the name of it. If you use the muratic acid, you have to be patient and let it do its work, it takes time, you will need about a gallon, of full strength, not the cut down stuff. seal off the openings, put in and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, the turn on it side, do the same thing, then you have to make sure you get all the acid out of it, my SIL does this with a pressure washer, then it has to dry, if it is not dry, the sealer will not stick or dry. Then pour sealer in the tank, make shure you coat it ALL, then dump the excess back in the can, make sure you seal the can real good or it will set up and ruin it. Put plastic wrap between can and lid or it will seal lid to can and again, make it useless.

Dave

This subject has been addressed many times on here.

Now I don't catch everything on these forums but I've never heard anyone mention Renu.

I had a bad gas tank on a MTA and took it to a Renu dealer and they did a great job on it.

They bead blast the tank and line the tank with something I believe.

That was 11 years ago for me and it hasn't cause a problem since.

Do a web search for Renu gas tank.

Worked great for me.

You'll get lots of good advice, but remember that there is a baffle part way back, so any rocks, washers, etc. that you put in need to go under or around the baffle.

There are many fuel tank liners available people swear by but I have never used any. I get good results by keeping the tank full and using the tractor.
