I have recently purchased a Super A IH tractor and I am in the process of restoring it. I am trying to determine if the battery connections on the tractor are Negative to starter and positive ground or negative ground and positive to starter. I have been informed that positive is ground. I am trying to verify this claim. Comments would be appreciated. Thanks Sonny

If you"re asking what it"s "supposed" to be, then it should have a positive ground electrical system.

If you"re asking what it IS, here are a couple of things to look for to help figure it out:

1. Alternator vs. generator: The presence of an automotive-type alternator on the front corner of the tractor is a sure sign of a 12V negative ground conversion.
2. Battery: If the battery has only 3 caps, and the terminals are on diagonally-opposite corners, it"s a 6V battery. The positive terminal will be connected to ground if it"s positive ground. A 12V battery will have 6 caps, or will be the maintenance-free type, and the terminals will be on the same side.

A stock system can work as either positive or negative ground as long as you don"t have any accessories (i.e. radio, CB, fan, etc), and the generator has been properly polarized. Again, it"s "supposed" to be positive ground.

It came from the factory with 6 volt positive ground. If it's still 6 volt be sure to get heavy duty battery cables. I have the local Case/IH dealer make them. Dave.
