Bought a 1947 this spring,running fine all summer .yesterday morning would start but sputters under load (in gear),removed carb,cleaned ,gas flow good.How to trouble shoot ?what might be the cause of sudden change in performance?thanks mb

If it is shooting out black smoke when it sputters, it is running rich. You'll need to check carb adjustments and/or float level.
If no smoke, then it is either too lean (carb adjustment or fuel restriction) or the ignition is breaking down. If ignition, I'd start with points because they are cheap, but it really sounds like the coil may be the culprit, since the hotter it gets under load, the more likely it is to suffer from coil breakdown. You could put it under a load first thing in the morning, before the coil gets hot, and see if you have no sputter, or even a lot less sputter....
I would say also check for water in fuel, but I would expect a sputter most all the time with that - not just when under a load.

many thanks for your suggestions, bought without knowing much of it's history only that the motor had been rebuilt,allways run a bit rich ,will be ordering carb kit today as well as ignition tune up, the magneto doesn't seem to have any markings,would this be an H4,is the coil a standard 12v ? thanks again mb ott canada.
