Forward of the magneto, there is a part of my ’44 M that has two hoses going into it. I assume this is part of the hydraulics? What is it, a pump or something?

I have a hyd pump that looks just like that one. If you look on the underside of the pump you will see a tag that will probably tell you that it is an M&W. As a matter of fact I was just changing the oil and cleand the breather on it today.

Thanks for all the replys. I seem to learn something here every time I log on.

Some other questions regarding the hydraulics:

First things first--what weight oil should I be putting in for the hydraulics? I've been using SAE-30.

Is there anyway to "turn-off" or deactivate that pump, without just unbolting the thing from the tractor?

Further back on the tractor is the fill tube for the hydraulic fluid. Mine has a cap with a dipstick (red-oragne cap in the picture). The cap has a small vent hole on the top, and it always has oil weeping out of it when the tractor is running. The oil isn't overfilled. Do I need a new cap, or is there something that screws into the top of the cap to keep the oil from weeping out?

The vent (bleed valve) was used when you are set up for 1-way operation since the oil level in the Lift=All pump was continually changing with use. When set up for 2-way or live hydraulics, the vent can be closed to reduce the oil vapor slobber and help keep dirt out of the system. You can get the bleed valve at your IH dealer.

With your two way valve and oil return into the fill pipe you probably need to plug the vent. Just put a small screw in the hole. Depneding on how it is hooked up I don't think it will build pressure and hurt anything but you might want to check it.

Not sure what oil the M&W system requires. Most likely however it uses #30 non-detergent oil - same as spec’d for IHC belly pump hydraulics.

There’s no way to deactivate or turn off the live hydraulic pump. However since the hydraulics are “open center” the energy required to run the pump unloaded amounts to only a few tenths of a horsepower – too small probably to even show up on a dyno were you to remove the pump.

Don’t know about the fill cap weeping oil. Might be it’s the wrong cap (ie. the wrong length dipstick hence the oil level is too high?) Or maybe the cap vent is damaged, or perhaps it's missing a gasket?

Yes, that is an aftermarket live hydraulic pump. Maybe an M&W. That is not a magneto but an IH battery ignition Distributor conversion.

Yes, it does look like a M&W. Always wondered if M&W put their tags on Hydreco's or another mfg's pump.

How is the pump powered? I don't think there's a pulley in front of it, is it powered off the crankshaft or something?

Usually the pump is located in the belley of the tractor, right? Was the "live pump" an aftermarket option, or something from the factory?

The pump is driven off the cam gear, I believe. Factory live pumps were available on later Super H's and Super M's, mounted at the same place. M&W's were added by the dealer or owner.

Blue - I agree with the others - the pump looks like an M&W. It was not a factory option. The pump is driven indirectly by the crankshaft. Ie. the crankshaft drives the camshaft gear which in turn drives the distributor/live hyd pump drive gear.

Incidentally it appears your M has the original IHC distributor ignition. The hydraulic pump would have been sandwiched between the engine front cover and the distributor sometime after the tractor left the factory.
