I have our 1950 H apart for some transmission work, and I'm going to replace the seal and probably a bearing in the belt unit while everything is apart. I've tried to pull the belt shaft out before and replace the seal (figured it would be easy), but the shaft won't come out. I thought I would see more now that it's off, but I still have no hint how to get to the seal. My service manual doesn't go into details about disassembly, so if someone can't solve this mystery for me, I guess it's time to start unbolting stuff and see what happens, which makes me a little nervous. Doesn't seem like it should be this difficult though. What am I missing?

Thanks

I replaced on my M had to take it to the dealer to have it pressed apart it is tight and not for the faint of heart make sure you have the correct tools to press it apart. It goes back together a lot easier. I figgure that is why all of them you see leak. I have 3 more of them that are leaking they can just leak.

All you have to do is remove the four bolts that are behind the flange that the pulley bolts to. The shaft will then slide out along with the bearings and gear, which are pressed on the shaft. You will then have to remove the bevel gear, one bearing and the spacer. The second bearing is secured in the bearing cage with a snap ring. The gear will have to be pressed off while the bearing is not quite so tight of a fit and can be tapped off with a hammer. Once the gear, spacer and bearing are off, you can then remove the bearing cage, which houses the second bearing and oil seal. Replace the seal, reassemble and you are home free!

I removed the flange bolts, and that's as far as I can get along your steps. :)

Maybe a rubber mallot would help, but I'm claiming that my shaft will not slide out. Looking at the picture in my manual, it looks like the bevel gear on the shaft has to go through two bearings, one on each end of the shaft. But both bearings won't slide out, will they? It seems like the shaft would have to be split, but I guess that's not the case. Even if I started unbolting everything on the unit, I'm not confident this thing will come apart.

It will slide out. You may have to persuade it a little with a hammer, but it will come out. I have had to do this twice before.

Haha, nothin' to it. :)
Yeah, I had to use some force with the rubber mallet to get the shaft to slide out to where the first bearing was out of the housing. Then it seemed stuck there, even with moderate force. Changed to using a large screwdriver with a sharp prying motion on alternating sides around the shaft, and it finally starting coming out. Once the entire shaft was out, I took off the bolts on the end, and the bearing and gear actually slid off without much force. Snap ring was easy to get off, tapped the shaft off of the flange housing/bearing cage, and tapped the bearing out. Now I just need to press the seal out and replace. Not bad, except for that first step.

The inner bearing is pretty shot though. I've heard a bit about getting bearings from NAPA; can I just bring the old bearing and have them find a new bearing that matches?

Thanks a bunch!

Great! Glad you got it! Yep, just take the old bearing to NAPA and they will get you a match.
