Was running my M around this week and the right brake was making a sqeeking noise. If i tapped the right brake it would shut up for about 2 min. then start back up. Haven't had a chance to the cover off yet. Is this just normal for these old ones with bands or should I take the cover off and take a look. Someone told be the band could be down to the rivets and thats what I am hearing. It's just anyoing on a 2 day tractor ride! Brakes work good and can lock up either tire, but I have more than the 1" of play that I have seen on this forum.

Yes, the do make noise when applied which i believe is normal, but that right one will get to making noise with no brake applied. The only think making me believe it has something to do with the brake is that I can get it to quit for a little while by tapping or using that right brake. I"ll take that cover off and look.

Have you set the screw adjustment on the bottom of the brake housing? Apply the brakes hard & lock them, loosen the locknut, turn the screw in until it bottoms on the brake band, back it out 1/2 turn & re-lock the nut. This helps keep the brake band from dragging on the drum.

Pull the cover off and look. If it squeaks when not applied, it is not the band, unless they are undersized. If you can lock the wheel it is not worn all that much. I suppose it could be the bearing, I don't know, as I have never experienced that problem. If you mean it squeaks when applied, that is normal, at least for older bands.
