The tanks are seam welded. It is a spot welding process where the 2 halves are placed between 2 copper wheels. These wheels act as the welder tips. Takes a lot of electricity. Probably was also a water cooled welding process.

I had this problem with an OS6 that I restored. I filled the tank with CO2 and cut the baffle into little pieces with a torch and removed it thru the filler opening. It doesnt seem to bother that I don't have the baffle. I only drive it in parades with 3 or 4 inches of fuel in the tank.

you could never get the tank apart without ruining it. they are welded together with a [for lack of the proper name ] a continuous spot welder that travels. that is what puts the little tread marks on the tank's lips.

I wondered how they did that. Must have been a good method cuz after 50 years they seldom leak.

Not without leaving a weld showing. And the whole idea of saving the tank is originality. Good idea Jossette but I don't think Paul would be happy with it.

I have thought about cutting an opening on the front right under were the hood would sit. reweld it back up after I get the baffle out. Guess Im being to much of a perfectionist but with this tank being different from others and the low serial number I wont be happy with the wrong tank if I can help it. Paul

That is what I would do cut the tank-front out with a 1/16" rotary cutting disk.....you can spot it back with ,mig, tig,or brass rod and gas welder..... grind, sand and paint youl never see it..... ..Don

No you couldn't cuz you go out and look at you M and you can see the seam. If you weld it it will be covered up.

I thought maybe you could make a slit on the bottom going from right to left and put the baffle in the slit and weld all of it together. As long as it was just handing there. Remember, a Good welding man could do it, for a price..

I'm pretty sure it was welded together. I'd throw the tank out.
