To put on a new cluch on a M do u have to split the tractor or take the motor out or something what do u do?

You can get the clutch out without splitting the tractor. Take out the hydraulic pump if you have one and get to the clutch through that area. If you have the pump its pretty heavy - either needs to guys or a floor jack to guide it down and back up later.

If it has the 11 inch clutch, you can replace the disk and pressure plate by taking out the hydraulic belly pump, and removing things through that opening. Very late model M's and Super M's have a 12 inch clutch. You can replace the disk on these without splitting, but if you want to replace the pressure plate you have to split the tractor.

I am not sure at which serial number IH went from 11 inch to 12 inch clutch on the M, but I do know that it was very late in the model run.
