I know this is a off the wall question but some of the people here are the smartest people I have never met. LOL Is there any way for a person like my self to tell the difference between Gold and Pirites. My Gramp brought me back a crubly rock for my birthday back in the 60s when he visited CA. He did go on a gold mining expedition tour when he was there. He has been dead for years now and I crumbled the stone. I have watched the gold mining shows on the outdoor channel and they say to look for black soot I believe and there is a lot of it here. The only thing I know is gold is yellow dull in color not shinny. ANY IDEAS????? ? JON

Best way I found to keep the kids "amused" was to give them a salt shaker and send them out in the yard. Told them if you sprinkle salt on a bird's tail you could catch the bird. Lots of brown spots in the yard, but no bird for supper. Funny thing is we didn't have rabbit eggs for breakfast that I can remember either.

Believe it or not, but I do a bit of gold prospecting as a hobby of mine. I've found a little and was actually in the Northern California gold country this spring. The easiest way to distinquish between gold and pyrite is the way the early prospectors did. Crumble it up, and put it in water an slosh it around a bit. If it sinks faster than you can blink its gold and if it takes a bit of time for it to settle down its not gold. Gold will hit the bottom of your container before you can hardly stop sloshing it. Gee-whiz magman, you went and got my hopes all up. I thought you were going to tell us how you had found actual gold in those magnetos.

Iron Pyrite is hard and chrystilline. Gold is soft and malleable, but is often found in quartz and such.

If you can dent or mar the surface, like it was tin, with a dental pick, it may be worth getting it tested by a gemologist. If it is flakey and brittle it is pyrite. Pyrite containing rocks can have gold, but about .0001 or less (economical to mine with massive equipment, but less valuable than the zink in a penny) Best of good fortune, JimN

Gold (when in its elemental form, which means pretty darn pure)is soft and malliable. It is capable of being hammered to such thin sections that it can be called gold leaf. Alloys of gold and other minerals are often much harder. Gold (as found in most mines today) is an alloy of metalic metals and silicon rock. Often Zink, silver, some lead, and others. The gold is so mixed in that the rock must be crushed to powder in a ball mill then seperated with chemistry, including arsnic. Elemental gold found naturally is almost always soft enough to put marks in rather than scratch with flaking. Gold is very much heavier than iron or silicon, so comparing your "sample" with a similar volume of common rock would indicate if it is "goldish". JimN

You need to go ahead and send it to me and I'll check it for you.

'Cause I'm such a nice guy, I'll even pay for you to ship it here- I'll send you a certified check to pay for shipping. Due to a printing error at the bank the check will be made out for $250,000.00, but just go ahead and cash it and take what you need to ship the rock and mail me the balance.

Once you find out what that gold's worth you'll probably be interested in buying a couple bridges I have for sale too! :)

If not I bet there is some sucker out there that will believe it is real and pay even more..LOL I think I will play beverly hillbilly rerunds for the kids this weekend and give them a steel stake to poke in the ground tell them to look for that black gold.
