I'm talking to my Borther-in-law about the H I didn't win. He thinks this whole tractor restoration is cool as hell, and may want to do one himself. (Great, now I will have an addiction buddy! lol) We were talking about the M and H, and how I had decided to get an H because of the shorter size and lighter weight. He says: "Noooo, a big guy like you (6'4") needs a big tractor! Take off the muffler and it will fit in the garage. And your Trailblazer should be able to handle it fine. But think how silly you would look driving a little H, when you could be driving a big M! Get the M!"

So... now I'm back to trying to decide between an H and an M again.

*sigh*

Mike, just as a side note to show what determination and insanity (and maybe stupidity) can provide, I have (currently) nine tractors from a Regular, F-20's, B, SC, and M's. I have neither a truck, nor a trailer. And, I live 150 miles from the farm where these beauties are kept (rusting). I live in the middle of a city, so no where to run a tractor, even if I had one here (the neighbors would love the open exhaust of the F-20). I actually did restore my 1936 F-20 here at my house, in pieces, and transported the finished parts back to the farm for reassembly, again without owning a truck or trailer. So, not having a capable truck or trailer is DEFINITELY not a deal breaker. It just takes a LOT of 12-packs, begging, and some planning.

I thought H's weighed 4k, not 5k.

ok, so the M is just going to be too heavy. Maybe I'll have to relook at truck gas milage in November. I was going to buy a car because it would be much more fuel effecient for my 45 minute commute.

The H is too heavy for your Trailblazer, too. 4500 lbs plus 2000 for the trailer = 6500 lbs, don't try it. Your vehicle is too light, the wheelbase is too short. It is possible to get an H down to 4000, without wheel weights, but you are still pushing the envelope. Depending on what engine you have and what rear axle ratio, it might pull it, but it isn't safe. If you don't have an accident and die, you are going to melt your transmission.

See the link, click the "trailering" link -- remember the "6600" includes the vehicle trailer passengers and luggage. The 6600 is for a 5.3, the smaller engine will "tow" 6200 with a 4.10 rear axle. Consider the ratings to be optimistic and not real world.

I haven't read the other posts (yet), but put an M behind a Trailblazer and you have a very large tail wagging a small dog--do not do that!

I sell RV"S for a living and you would'nt believe the amout of folks who are rated to pull 5,000 lbs and want to but that 8 or 10,000 lb trl because it is bigger and nicer, My advice get a buddy to tow whatever you buy. if you only have a trailblazer!!!!! be responsible we want your kids to enjoy your presents for a long time to come!!!!! !

If all you have to haul with is a Trailblazer, then you may want to consider something else, like a Cub or an A. I would hate to be behind you if you were pulling an H with it and had an accident.

Mike, can you email me. I know someone in California who may be interested in the X20 tractor you found. He may also have an H for you.

You mean that M, with X20 after the serial number? Sure, no problems.

Thanks! My friend collects McCormick and Farmall Cotton Pickers. I bought a set of high axles and tall front wheel from him earlier. He can help you with your H/M hunt, or maybe even have what you want. I have 4 M's and no H's. They are big, but not too big. Everything associated with tractors is heavy, so it really boils down to what you can get and what you will do with it.

There is an M that has been converted to some sort of Cotton picking/carrying contraption in Fresno California. I found it on Ebay. I can't get into Ebay at work, but if you search for Farmall M, and look through the page, you can't miss it. Looks like a house sitting on top of an M.

The X20 M I found doesn't look like anything special. Just an M that had a strange serial number. So I don't know if it has some feature I'm not away of, or the "extras" it came with are gone.

Mike:
Hurry up and decide on something and buy it. We're all way over due for giving you a "congratulations" on your first Farmall. I've been a Super A man for over 50 years and now you've got me looking at H's too! Hope you find a good one....

You may want to reevaluate your decision on a tow vehicle. A Trailblazer in my opinoin would be close to the limit on tow capacity when you figure an H at 5,000lb and a M at 5500lb. Also a car trailer may be to narrow to haul an M. I tow with a K1500 and a 7000gvw flat bed trailer.an H on the trailer is more than I would want to pull for a long distance. My friend's M barely fits on his 18' Cornpro implement trailer.

I also have to say go with the H. I'm 6 foot and theres no problem and you can adjust most seats on most tractors. Now if you where say looking for a cub ya you might look funny on a cub. LOL

I don't know about that? I would really review what you are going to be using the tractor for. If ya gotta have 3 bottoms, then go to the M...if ya only need 2 bottoms...go for the H. I'm a lanky 6'3" and don't find the H uncomfortable to sit on at all. Having spent decent time on both tractors, once I'm in the seat the only thing that seems to separate one from the other to me, is just the angle of the steering shaft. My dad has the same frame as myself and he doesn't look a bit silly sitting on the H. Don't forget that you can adjust some of the seat styles on the H for more leg room too.

Just my thoughts on it...nothing more. Good luck!

Billy

Your first project tractor should be the H. It's smaller, the parts are lighter in weight, it will take up less space in your garage, and, in my opinion, as a rule, the Hs did not see the same abuse as most Ms. There are exceptions.

MikeCA,
I expect that with all this detailed attention to deciding which (H or M) tractor you will purchase the resulting restored tractor will be a marvel of equal attention to detail. Can't wait to see the finished product.
