What kind of oil should I use? Would 10w30 be ok? Tractor still sees little work or should I use just 30 weight oil. Thanks

In your climate 10W30 is fine. If you were in South Texas or Florida, I would say 30 weight.

Unless the engine has a fresh rebuild, I would only use non-detergent SAE 30. If you've ever had the oil pan off, you've seen a layer of sludge on the bottom of the pan that doesn't drain out when you change oil. I've seen this up to 1/4" thick. If you change to a detergent oil, the sludge can break loose and stay in suspension in the oil, and could plug up the oil pump screen, etc. The detergent in the oil will also wash all of the other grime in the crankcase into the oil. Not something that you want to have pumped thru the bearings. If you use the tractor alot below 32F, you could change to SAE 20 in the winter.

Wis. cowman, Multigrade oils use two numbers. The first number is the viscosity of the oil when it is cold such as 10W, the W stands for "winter" not "weight". SAE 30 is SAE 30 no matter what the "W" prefix is.HTH

I restored a 51 M last winter and have changed oil several times to get the old crap out (and there was plenty) aND USED THE RECOMMENDED STRAIGHT 30 WEIGHT recommended jy my manuals. Everything started to leak after the second oil change and since have gone to 40 weight. still leaks but less. I need to split the beast and install rear seals.

WC,

Choices of engine oil is a truly human thing.

That old M is inert. It doesn't give a fig what you use and will operate perfectly fine on melted down whale blubber if you pour it in there.

I agree 100%. People get way overly concerned about the "proper" engine oil. These old Farmalls don't care. Any oil you can get today is so much better than what was available 60 years ago. I don't think I would use 5w-30, but 10w-30 will be just fine.

Are you using the tractor in the winter in a northern climate?
I use straight 30 detergent in all our units (8 running at this time) since they are just summer-fall used machines.
Be sure to change the filter each time you change the oil and dig out ALL the old filter gasket(s) before installing the new gasket. Ask your dentist for a couple old picks next time you visit. At the prices they charge you should be able to get an old tool for nothing. It never hurts to ask!
Just this morning I scored a free bag of floor dry from my favorite parts supplier; the bag had split during handling and they could not sell it so the boss gave it to me. I think I will be back in the future.

The choice of oils is controversial. I believe that an engine that is not running hot, and has no issues with coking in valve stems can be better protected with multi wt oils. 10-40 or 15-40 brand name oils. I also believe in synthetic oils (ames oil, mobile 1 etc. In an M used in a way that it was intended, I would use 10-40, or 15-40 oil. If it was loose, and had marginal oil pressure when hot, I would use a 20-50 oil, or a straight wt40 oil. In tractors that coke valves, (some IH gas 6 cylinder units, I would use straight wt 30).

By the way, and without flame in any way, the reaction to your name is in response to the high visibility and authority from respect that Nebraska Cowman has earned through his dedication to all forum participants, his knowledge, and his ethical stance. (read the article attached in the post below on Nebraska Cowmanand below), his consistant positive attitude, and the fact that we associate the Cowman name with him. If I were you, I would choose a different screen name, and let it be known in a post to that effect. The participants of this forum would be appreciative. JimN

Sir I don't want to inflame you also. But when you post that participants would appreciate that wisconsin cowman use another name you do not speak for me. Don't see a thing wrong with cowman being from other states as long as there not trying to con anyone. He is asking tractor questions. This is just my opinion and may not reflect the majority.
