I just got a 1949 farmall cub a few days ago, and I was greasing everything up. I put 90wt gear oil in the transmission, and then it starts leaking fluid really bad out of the hole on the underside of the axle. I have a picture of this hole, with the fluid pouring out of it. It did not leak before i put the gear oil in the gearbox. It leaks worse out of the left side, but the right side started leaking as well. Should I have filled it up with something other than the 90wt gear oil? Are there supposed to be plugs in those holes? Please help, thanks.

Drain the transmission and differential (all one unit). There is a plug on the left side of the transmission. Refill until gear oil starts to run out this plug. This should solve your leak problem.

Your trans/differential is way over filled and has water in it. The trans/differential only takes 2 or 3 quarts of gear lube.

The seals everyone is talking about may need replacing. But they are not intended to hold back excess gear lub. Try filling to the fill plug and see if you still have the problem.

You may want to drain the transmission it sure looks like you have some water mixed in the oil. Do not try to plug the hole it will then run out the front of the housing where the brake rod enters the housing. It Appears that you have a seal leaking between the transmission and the final drive and the transmission is over filled

How full did you fill the transmission? It's not supposed to hold but about 3 pints. Look on the left side of the tractor between the fender and transmission housing down toward the bottom of the transmission and you will see a 1/4" pipe plug. Remove it and when it stops running, it will be at the proper level. If you over fill the transmission, even a new seal can (and probably will) leak.

It has an inboard seal that has gone bad on you. You need to remove the tire and wheel then remove that side of the axle houseing and you will see the seal . I fixed that on a friend cub a couple years ago. Its not all the hard to do but it does work better if you have 2 people or a chain hoist to help hold the axle houseing. When we did his we did all the seals in the tranny area just so all would be right.

No plugs in the hole. Your seals are probably shot, and you may have overfilled gearbox.

Looks like there should be a plug in that hole.
