Im getting ready to reinstall the starter on my Super A. I noticed when I turn the bendix gear by hand out towards the starting position that the spring is not strong enough to return the bendix to its original postion. Any thoughts on this appreciated, should I just get a new spring?

I did a search on this problem and didnt find exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

scotty: On your next trip up to cottage in VT, take that bendix starter drive with you and loose it in the hills. Then go to CaseIH, and buy one of the newer clutch type starter drives. You will never be sorry, they are so much easier on the ring gear and starter drive gear. I've had the clutch drives on my SA and 130 for 15 years now. In fact when I was told about them in 1992, I was considering spliting 130 and changing ring gear, that did not happen. In fact I did split the 130 in 2001, installed a new clutch, presure plate, pilot bushing and release bearing. We did not change the ring gear. I plow snow with that tractor, thus it sees far more year around starting than either my SA or 140.

The Bendix type starter drive is returned to the "at rest" position when the flywheel spins faster than the starter. The spring is a cushion when the starter first engages the flywheel. As long as the Bendix drive moves freely you should be good to go.
