I what to know what filter I should get for my 1949 M serail number PBK 200423X1. The Wix book says TO S/N FBKM59393 lube 51155
S/N FBKM59394-on lube 51125
What one do I choose 51155 or 51125?

'39 to '41 M's used the same filter element as the MD's used, tall and large in diameter. After '41 the M's used the tall skinny filter, but it's still about the same height. The '39 to '41 H's used the tall skinny filter, same as the late M's, and after '41 used the short skinny filter.

very simple is it short or tall just measure the canister. You do not know if the canister was ever changed.

A 49 should use the short filter.

Take you parts man the old filter. You cant always go by serial numbers. I have 2 41 Ms with the big one, and a 40 with the small one.The engine has been changed at some point in its life and the person who changed it used the smaller filter.

51125
They're saying that if your number is 59393 or less you use 51155. If it's 59394 or higher, use 51125. Your number being 200423, use 51125. Sometimes it's hard to see past all the prefixes and suffixes to the number that counts. (Intended, o.c.)
Good Luck, Wm
