My A has a replacement block without a serial #.

It has a thermosyphon cooling system. What dates featured this system, or when did waterpump systems come in for the A?

I've also heard about casting codes, but all I see on the castings are part numbers.

The "A" never had a water pump. The Super A-1, 1954 was the first. The casting code will be something like 8-1-Q, which would be August 1, 1947. R would be 1948 and so on. 1951 could be U, V, or W, and X would be 1952. It started over in 1955 with A.
