What's Up With 460 Utility's?

I've been looking around for a tractor that just might do what Mom needs around the small horse farm she has, and I think a 460 Utility just might fill the bill. Unfortunately, it seems that every one I see is--in MY eyes--grossly overpriced.

Is there just more demand than supply for these things? I'm looking for a gas tractor with TA, PTO [some didn't have one or the other...some industrial loader tractors may not have had either]...fast hitch is my 1st choice, with 3-point arms; 3-point is second choice.

Mostly what I've seen on the internet is junk for $2-3,000, stuff that would take a couple grand to make into what might be a $2,000 tractor. Considering Dad was selling NEW 706's in '63 for around $3,500, I'm having a hard time justifying the same money for a worn-out shadow of that.

Or is there something wrong with my expectations? In the late '60's, a decent Cub was selling for $2500 with a Woods 42; these days, you can buy the same Cub for the same money. Is it speculators, or is the 460U a hot property, or are my expectations out of whack?

Paid $4500 for mine with new wheels and tires with IH2000 loader. T/A, PTO. Put another $400 in it. Still missing the white trim body parts.

Parts are easy to get, there are a million 460, 560, and others that parts are universal with.

Buzzman: After reading the responces to your thread, I can see why I don't have a 460 Utility. Personally I can't see anymore value in them than you do. Now, I know these guys are talking supply and demand, and they are probably right.

I know what you said in your post, however if I were looking for a 50 hp utility, I'd go for something built after 1963 and with 3 point hitch.

The only thing wrong is the devaluation of the U.S.Dollar. The current price is 1/4 the value in spinding power than the original $ . JimN

A 460U is a modern tractor, will do the same thing as one of equivalent size that costs $30000. Live hydraulics with up to 3 remotes, live pto, power steering, etc. The problem is finding one that does not need a lot of expensive repairs. I am currently working on a 460 Hi Utility, which is a high clearance utility with a row crop rear end. Paid $2600 for it -- needs about everything.

The utility market has its own pricing and has twice the market potential a row crop tactor does. Any 2 acre homestead or 1000 acre farm can use a utility tractor, but only the "farm" will have any use for a row crop tractor. Thats why the average 8N will bring $2000 worth it or not and an H averages $1000 or less. Then you need to factor in the fact a 460 utility is 4 times the tractor a 8N is. And as mentioned below utility tractors were made in far fewer numbers.

In 2002 I purchased a 460 utiliy for 3500, It needed about 2000 worth of parts plus rear tires.I spent most of that winter working on it after hours. Finished out pretty nice, I have turned down 6000 for it and also a guy wanted to trade 2 460 row crops for it.Recently I saw a 606 basicaly the same tractor go for 7200 at auction

I had a 460, Gas, Utility, for a couple of years, and they are a nice tractor. I do not think that you can buy a good 460 for under $3500.00, they did not make a lot of 460 Utilitys, and they are a lot better tractor than the other IH Utilitys before them. Now, the newer versions, say maybe a 574, are even a better tractor. I think having $4000.00 to $5000.0 in a GOOD, NICE, 460 Utility, when you are done, is probably about right, if you have hired the work done on it. If I found a decent 460 Ute around here for 2K, or under, I would buy it.
