In the September-October 2001 edition of Red Power, Guy Fay wrote an article about IHC changing “From Gray to Red” containing the following:

FA-68749 was the first factory red F-20
FB-19064 was the first factory red F-30
FS-81837 was the first factory red F12
WS-2768 was the first factory red W-12
WB-15970 was the first factory red W-30
KC-210235 was the first factory red 10-20

However, IHC offered a repainting program to their dealers. As a result, some earlier tractors that came gray from the factory were sold as red.

Perhaps, Guy Fay could review this chart and Kim could include it in the left-hand column along with the year-serial number chart.

Re: Is black Grey? in reply to F-Dean, 07-31-2006 10:00:38
I am having a little turmoil in my head regarding the 27 regular that I have. Friends who come by say that they dont remember the tractor being black...that is (black with 1/2 cup of white in it per Howard) I am told a couple of times that they remember dark gray. However, I have seen another regular on this site or somewhere, that is the same color black as I have wound up with...Can somebody help me screw my head back on?? About this color?? :-)

Ok, My opinion, not worth much, but here it is:
***Accepting the notion that IH Gray was Surplus Battleship Paint, How close did the Department of the Navy keep tabs on their gray paint? Were any 2 ships matched exactly? Was there a computerized paint matching system that assured all Navy ships left drydock the same color? Don't think so. IH probably had some measurement ratios near the end of the gray run, but unless the rumored 2 original Gallons found in a dealership shop and being computer formulized at McCormick-Deering dot com(so the story goes for the last 2 years) ever hit the street, I say go with the shade you like. I spent way too much time and effort picking the paint on my F-12 and then the Regular. My Regular had some exposed original gray that had faded through the years to a light blue. This leads me to believe that run had some extra blue tint in it. The F-12 was definately a darker gray under all the grease and later-added red. 8 years between the 2.
**Moral***
Paint it the shade you like and thumb your nose at any and all detractors. After all...It's yours, not theirs.
I will step off of the soapbox now and return to lurking.
Kevin

Maybe you got it a little extra dark? I'm sure no two batches of black get the same amount of pigment. I had an old axle dust cove to match to. Never mind the nay-sayers. All the old guys that would know for sure either don't remember as good as they once did or they are dead. I think it's gonna be purty :)

This is actually a bit mischaracterized.

The serial numbers listed are the first tractors produced on November 1st, 1936, which is the date of the official change to red. No wether they were the first tractors painted red or not depends on if they did things on time, or wether the paint line had a gun with a couple gallons left....

Thanks, I printed off that info and filed it with my other papers. I had heard that they had unearthed some data but had never seen it in print.
